Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Upon completion of the organization's irs form 990, the return is reviewed by senior management for accuracy and completeness. Once the senior management has reviewed and approved the form 990, the return is sent to the executive committee for review. The form 990 is then reviewed with the full board of directors, approved, and then posted to the organization's website for access by directors and the public.

The president & ceo and senior management regularly monitor the conflict of interest policy and responses to the policy acknowledgement to ensure no conflict of interest exists. In the case of potential conflicts of interest, multiple bids are required and the potentially interested party does not have any involvement in the awarding of bids. Full disclosure is made to those making the decision.

The executive committee of the board of directors, under direction of the chairman of the board of directors, annually reviews the compensation for the organization's president & ceo and approves any changes. The president & ceo reviews annually the compensation for other officers and senior management of the organization and approves any changes within the range permitted by the annual budget. The annual budget is approved by the board as a whole.

The organization engages an independent cpa firm to audit its consolidated financial statements on an annual basis.

Form 990, Part IX

Habitat is committed to efficiency and transparency. We communicate with our supporters, donors and prospective donors by email, postal mail, phone, and other means, both to request contributions to our cause and to educate the public about habitat's year-round programs, volunteer opportunities and other events in local communities and around the world. These efforts help advance our mission to put god's love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. As a result, in accordance with the financial accounting standards board guidelines and internal revenue service guidance, habitat allocates a portion of our fundraising costs to program services. As a nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal taxation, we ensure our donors' money is spent as efficiently and effectively as possible. Depreciation, insurance, and utilities are allocated based on square-footage used by each program. We allocate these costs in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, or gaap across the program, management and general, and fundraising categories. Finally, some team members have responsibilities that cross over functional areas and are allocated based on estimates of time and effort.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Greater birmingham habitat for humanity, inc. (habitat), central alabama housing alliance (caha), and gbhfh funding company i, llc (gbhfh funding) are organized as alabama not-for-profit corporations and have been recognized by the irs as exempt from federal income taxes under irc section 501(a) as organizations described in irc section 501(c)(3), qualify for the charitable contribution deduction, and have been determined not to be a private foundation. Habitat and caha are annually required to file a return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) with the irs. Gbhfh funding is considered a disregarded entity and consolidated with habitat for tax reporting purposes. In addition, the organization is subject to income tax on net income that is derived from business activities that are unrelated to the organization's exempt purposes. Management has determined that habitat, caha, and gbhfh funding are not subject to unrelated business income tax and have not filed an exempt organization business income tax return (form 990-t) with the irs. Management believes that each entity has appropriate support for any tax positions taken affecting its annual filing requirements, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the consolidated financial statements. The organization would recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits and liabilities in income tax expense if such interest and penalties are incurred.

BY USING THE LABOR OF VOLUNTEERS, PROSPECTIVE HOMEOWNERS, AND DEDICATED SUBCONTRACTORS, EMPLOYING EFFICIENT BUILDING METHODS, KEEPING HOUSE SIZES MODEST, USING DONATED CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND APPLIANCES, AND ISSUING NO-PROFIT LOANS, HABITAT MAKES ITS HOUSES AFFORDABLE FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES TO PURCHASE. AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP HELPS CREATE THE CONDITIONS THAT FREE FAMILIES FROM INSTABILITY, STRESS AND FREE AND ENCOURAGE SELF-RELIANCE AND CONFIDENCE. STUDIES SHOW THAT STRONG AND STABLE HOUSEHOLDS ARE FOUNDATIONAL TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH. WHEN A HOME FOSTERS AND PROVIDES HEALTH AND SAFETY FAMILIES CAN FLOURISH.
