“Health smarts had a total of 1400 participants from september to april who participated in 7 sessions of instruction. Two ambassadors who need to earn extra money during the summer can be hired to teach in the summer youth sites with an adult instructor. Six summer sites such as boys and girls clubs, church youth groups, participate in the summer health smarts program. Auburn university measures the success of our program each year by comparing the youth pre and post-test data. Our results indicated that our participant sample scored higher in each of the 7 target areas which included: emotion knowledge, self confidence, social competence, commitment to avoid risky behavior, cooperative behavior, abuse awareness and resourcefulness. The average magnitude of the effect size for the improvements was a large effect on the youth participants ages 11-13.”

APPROXIMATELY 40 ARE CHOSEN TO BE AMBASSADORS WHO TEACH THE CURRICULUM, HEALTH SMARTS, IN THE CLASSROOMS WITH OUR ADULT INSTRUCTOR. |

TWO AMBASSADORS WHO NEED TO EARN EXTRA MONEY DURING THE SUMMER CAN BE HIRED TO TEACH IN THE SUMMER YOUTH SITES WITH AN ADULT INSTRUCTOR. SIX SUMMER SITES SUCH AS BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS, CHURCH YOUTH GROUPS, PARTICIPATE IN THE SUMMER HEALTH SMARTS PROGRAM. AUBURN UNIVERSITY MEASURES THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROGRAM EACH YEAR BY COMPARING THE YOUTH PRE AND POST-TEST DATA. OUR RESULTS INDICATED THAT OUR PARTICIPANT SAMPLE SCORED HIGHER IN EACH OF THE 7 TARGET AREAS WHICH INCLUDED: EMOTION KNOWLEDGE, SELF CONFIDENCE, SOCIAL COMPETENCE, COMMITMENT TO AVOID RISKY BEHAVIOR, COOPERATIVE BEHAVIOR, ABUSE AWARENESS AND RESOURCEFULNESS. THE AVERAGE MAGNITUDE OF THE EFFECT SIZE FOR THE IMPROVEMENTS WAS A LARGE EFFECT ON THE YOUTH PARTICIPANTS AGES 11-13. |
