DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The International Mammalian Genome Conferences provide an essential annual venue that brings together mammalian and biomedical geneticists from across the world to interact, form new collaborations and plan new research programs with the goal of improving the use of mammalian models to improve the health and well-being of people. An important aspect of the conferences is the training and mentoring of young scientists. The 38th International Mammalian Genome Conference (IMGC) was held in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland from April 6-9, 2025. One of the bonuses for this location was collaboration with the UKs National Mouse Genetics Network, a UK based network with multiple disease and technology focuses research clusters. More than 150 scientists from eleven countries met at the 38th IMGC to share advances in mammalian genetics and genomics research. A diverse attendance of pre-doctoral (40) and post-doctoral trainees (16), early-stage investigators, established researchers, clinicians, bioinformaticians, and computational biologists enjoyed a rich scientific program of 41 (plus 15 in the Trainee Symposium) oral presentations and 62 posters in the fields of epigenetics, system genetics, developmental biology, cancer, human disease modeling, technical advances, and bioinformatics. Others followed virtually and through social media highlights of talks (#IMGC). Social media has become an integral part of the IMGC as it complements the scientific content and facilitates ongoing discussions between scientists around the globe. Four workshops were offered covering Home Cage Monitoring, MGI Updates, Practical aspects of designing and developing genetically engineered animal models, and Mouse models of mitochondrial DNA disease. The Trainee Symposium had 15 excellent talks of which 3 were selected for plenary presentation in the main meeting and IMGS recognized this achievement with the The Lorraine Flaherty Award. Thirty-three young scientists were supported by this grant to participate in the 38th IMGC and 12 of the recipients spoke in the Trainee Symposium, 11 more in the main meeting. The Verne Chapman Lecture was given by Dr. Xavier Montagutelli (Pasteur Institute, Paris, France). The George Snell Lecture was given by Dr. Martin Hrabe de Angelis (Helmholtz Zentrum, Munich, Germany), and the Mary Lyon Lecture was given by Dr. Rachel Lynch (UNC at Chapel Hill, NC, US). Scientific Organizers of the 38th IMGC: Linus Reichenbach, (MRC National Mouse Genetics Network, Glasgow, Scotland, UK), Debora Bogani (Mary Lyon Research Centre, Harwell, UK), Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena (UNC at Chapel Hill, NC), Yann Herault (IGBMC, Strasbourg, France), Laura Reinholdt (The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME). Logistics: Darla Miller (IMGC) Abstracts and program for the 38th IMGC are available on line at https://www.imgs.org/2025-38th-program. Other IMGS information is at imgs.org.-$134,337

Mentoring Young Scientists. There are 5 primary ways this was accomplished. 1) The Mary Lyon Award: the IMGS has established the Mary Lyon Award for early-stage independent female researchers tenure-track Assistant Professor or equivalent. The award covers expenses for the recipients to participate in an IMGS Conference and give an oral presentation of their work. Dr. Rachel Lynch of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was given the Mary Lyon Award in 2025. 2) Scientists-In-Training Scholarships. IMGS sponsors subsistence scholarships for students and postdoctoral scholars to attend and present their research at the IMGC. These awards are selected from trainees who submit abstracts and request scholarship support. All recipients are required to attend the Student Satellite Symposium. The awards typically cover housing, registration, and travel depending on availability of funds. The IMGS Oral Presentation Award winners for 2025 were: Maximillian Schmidtke, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Martin Hrabe de Angelis at the Helmholtz Center Munich, Germany; Millie Fullerton, a post doctoral fellow in in Dr. H Phillips laboratory at Newcastle University, UK; and Alexa Michaels, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Beth Dumont at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, US. 3) Student Satellite Symposium: A unique feature of the IMCG is a satellite symposium designed as a venue for student and postdoctoral scholars to give a talk and interact with other trainees as well as members of the IMGS Secretariat. Members of the Secretariate judged the presentations and the top 4 were selected to receive Lorrain Flaherty Awards cash. The 2024 award recipients were: Brian Gural, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Christoph Rau at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US; Aliona Harten, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Martin Hrabe de Angelis at the Helmholtz Center, Munich, Germany; Alexa Michaels, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Beth Dumont at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, US; and Caryl Young, a student in the laboratory of Dr. Steve Murray at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME, US. 4) Student Awards. Another unique an important feature of the IMGC is the recognition of outstanding presentation by scientists-in-training. The Verne Chapman Young Scientist Award is a cash prize and 2 years on the IMGS Secretariat, presented for the most outstanding oral presentation with the greatest potential for impacting the future of mammalian genetics. The recipient for the Verne Chapman Young Scientist Awards for 2025 was Aliona Harten, a student of Dr. Martin Hrabe de Angelis at the Helmholtz Center, Munich, Germany. Additional awards were given as follows: The IMGS Oral Presentation Award winners for 2025 cash and a book from Springer-Verlag: Maximillian Schmidtke, Millie Fullerton, Alexa Michaels, and Caryl Young. The IMGS Poster Award winners for 2025 cash or book: Victorine Artot, Hilda Frempong, and Rachel Moore. 5) Mentor Meal. To further enhance the training experience, starting in 2009, one meal provided during the conference was designated as a Mentor Meal. A group of established, successful scientists with varied positions including academic, industry and administrative sit with junior participants, who can seek career, publishing or other advice in an informal setting. This has become a highlight of the IMGC to many of the trainings.--
