Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The circus project was founded on a simple yet innovative idea: that the unique appeal of circus arts can benefit marginalized youth in unprecedented ways - and that in turn, their unique perspectives would propel the growing field of circus arts to new heights. What began in 2008 as a pioneering experiment to empower homeless youth through the development of original, skilled circus productions, has grown organically into a thriving arts organization that serves a diverse community through a public academy, professional performances, and a spectrum of social circus programs that utilize circus arts for individual and community transformation. Each of these programs support and enhance the others, working on multiple levels to promote personal development, artistry, and social justice.

To utilize circus arts to transcend social barriers and inspire personal transformation.

IRS990/Desc0SOCIAL CIRCUS: The Circus Project's award-winning Social Circus programs utilize circus arts as a vehicle to teach self-care, discipline, accountability and teamwork to youth for whom other paradigms have failed. Our proven methodologies revolutionize the approach to social services by empowering marginalized youth to become creative directors of their own lives. Each element of our outreach efforts is intricately linked to the others, thereby offering continuous training opportunities to youth who enter our programs, from introductory classes through professional employment. In 2015, we offered specialized, complimentary circus training with a therapeutic approach to over 275 underserved youth through our Social Circus programs. Programs include: High Flyers (a series of eight week introductory workshops on-site at social service agencies serving homeless youth and youth at risk for homelessness), Circus in the Schools (year-long residencies at schools serving predominantly low-income youth), and extended training opportunities for graduates of our High Flyers & Circus in the Schools program to continue training, free of cost, in our recreational & pre-professional Academy programs. 2015 partners included: Self Enhancement Inc., Friends of the Children, p:ear, Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center, and Beach, Boise-Eliot, Creston, and Ockley Green Elementary Schools.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE CIRCUS PROJECT WAS FOUNDED ON A SIMPLE YET INNOVATIVE IDEA: THAT THE UNIQUE APPEAL OF CIRCUS ARTS CAN BENEFIT MARGINALIZED YOUTH IN UNPRECEDENTED WAYS - AND THAT IN TURN, THEIR UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES WOULD PROPEL THE GROWING FIELD OF CIRCUS ARTS TO NEW HEIGHTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0ACADEMY: THE CIRCUS PROJECT'S ACADEMY OFFERS RECREATIONAL AND PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. IT PROVIDES A STREAM OF EARNED REVENUE FOR OUR SOCIAL CIRCUS PROGRAMS, AND A CONTINUUM OF TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES THAT ADVANCE THE FIELD BY TRAINING A NEW GENERATION OF INNOVATIVE ARTISTS. OUR ACADEMY ALLOWS US TO EXPAND OUR RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY REACH, WHILE FURTHERING OUR GOAL OF EMPOWERING UNDERSERVED YOUTH AND ELEVATING THE CALIBER OF CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS ARTS IN PORTLAND AND BEYOND. IN 2015 WE RELOCATED TO OUR FIRST DEDICATED TRAINING SPACE, ALLOWING US TO MORE THAN DOUBLE THE SIZE OF OUR STUDENT BODY, FROM 181 IN 2014 TO 452 IN 2015. WE LAUNCHED A PLETHORA OF NEW CLASSES, SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS, AND A SECOND PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COMPANY FOR YOUTH AGES 10-18. IN ADDITION, WE CREATED A MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM FOR PROFESSIONALS & DEDICATED STUDENTS WHICH SERVE AS A PROFESSIONAL INCUBATOR FOR LOCAL AND VISITING ARTISTS, AND HOSTED SEVERAL MASTER WORKSHOPS FEATURING ARTISTS FROM LES 7 DOIGTS DE LA MAIN AND CIRQUE DU SOLEIL.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PERFORMANCES: Performances are a critical component to the success of our mission, utilizing artistic excellence to inspire social change. The Circus Project creates bold new works that blur the distinction between tent and stage by infusing circus arts with the artistry of dance and the character-driven, emotionally riveting aspects of theatre. We integrate the newest developments in European and Canadian circus with a distinctly American perspective to create shows and events that are technically superb, emotionally stirring, and strengthen a sense of community amongst performers and audiences. 2015 performances reached over 3,250 audience members through six original productions and five featured events.
