Profile

The Foundation for Global Sustainability (FGS) works to restore balance between human activities and Earth's natural life support systems. It monitors environmental and social justice issues in Southern Appalachia. It represents its supporters and those who are concerned about developments that degrade ecosystem processes and the quality of life for ordinary citizens in public hearings and through comments on environmental impact statements. FGS cooperates with local, national and international organizations to promote planetary solidarity with Mother Earth and ALL its life forms to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. At its HellbenderPress.org website, FGS increases public awareness of opportunities to reduce environmental damages, make businesses and institutions more sustainable, build resilient communities and adopt life styles that will preclude Earth's living conditions from deteriorating to an inhospitable level for future generations over centuries if not millennia.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
PLANETARY SOLIDARITY: FGS is building a regional portal and model program to support community members in developing strong individual and cooperative initiatives to adopt more sustainable and resilient ways of consumption, production, operation, interaction, and exchange. Initiatives may range from the personal to the global level. The action emphasis, however, is intended to focus on local or regional IMPLEMENTATION, yet not without a clear awareness and idea of how it will contribute to the solution of a concerning planetary problem. By following the "Think Globally, Act Locally" ethos of solidarity with Mother Earth, all its people and all other forms of life, participants can identify immediate, practical, locally adapted opportunities to achieve more effective improvements than governmental mandates could and would. -- For decades, concerned citizens have demanded that governments take action to avert global environmental catastrophe. With every day it becomes clearer how we are already engulfed by it and that its severity is ever accelerating. It is high time for everyone to do their best by themselves as well as with their family, neighbors, coworkers and everyone else they can motivate and engage! -- Hellbender Press is providing background information on local and regional issues. It emphasizes their implications for ecosystems and the global commons and highlights sustainable solutions. -- We also work with the University of Tennessee, other academic institutions and high schools to build a foundation for environmental journalism in East Tennessee. Interns get editorial advisement and opportunities to contribute stories that help them start a journalism career and get clips for their portfolio. They may even find an occasion to boost scholarly research and earn a shared professional byline. Four students participated in completing vignettes as part of a years long cooperation with the environmental journalism class of Dr Mark Littman, School of Journalism and Media, at UT Knoxville. Ivy Zhang, a college bound honors student, considered her experience working with the Hellbender a bonus on her applications. Recent marketing graduate Robert Norris approached Hellbender for substantive bylines to further his career and the popularity of his "Maryville College Podcast." Keenan Thomas, a recent graduate of the UT journalism school, reached out to Hellbender to further his writing career. He ultimately went on to become a staff writer at the Knoxville News Sentinel. To read examples of their stories, go to hellbenderpress.org/search and enter Ivy Zhang, Robert Norris, Carly Broady, Keenan Thomas, Elan Young or vignette and press the Return key.$0$94,271

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0I expected to get this completed over the May 10/11 weekend, but I had a very hard time with our old version of QuickBooks that kept crashing on me and lost a big part of transaction entries that I needed to generate the financial statements with the details needed for form 990-EZ. Somehow it would not load the backup and it no longer allowed me to read them in from the bank accounts or a CSV dump of them because it claimed the the IIF file was incompatible, and when I generated a new IIF file, that one was not accepted either. It seems they changed something, but since Intuit dropped support of QuickBooks Desktop it may not have received newer codes. So I had to manually reenter more than 150 entries by copying and pasting from the bank statements, which was extremely tedious and time consuming, because each required switching back and forth with 2 to 5 copied snippets to paste them in the appropriate fields on QB. When I finally was ready to fill in the 990-EZ, the wonderful Form 990 Online asked me to set a new password but inadvertently I allowed my 1Password keychain to create a safe password that turned out to have 3 more characters than the 15 allowed by Form 990 Online. It already saved the password before I got the error message about the unaccepted new password. On next try it said the "old password" was incorrect. After half a dozen attempts with entering new passwords manually I finally realized that somehow 1Password fails to paste historic passwords to Firefox, silently using the latest one (unlike in Safari which I normally use). It did not help that I was so tired that my eyes were tearing constantly after spending every free minute over the previous 5 days (apart from taking care of my 82 year old wife and much of the household). When I finally got logged in I was just short of a few more minutes when the clock ran out. I was so distraught! This wouldn't have happened if we had switched to a new accounting software for FY 2023-24, but the migration would have required a major effort and we would have needed to hire professional help for it. Because we did not get the expected grants we delayed that effort. I'm getting to the point where I may have to make an earmarked donation for that purpose myself. I hope my wife will agree with that.
