Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The primary objective of the investments for the endowment fund is to adequately support the university's current financial needs while preserving assets for future generations by providing long-term growth of income and principal.

PART X, LINE 2:

The university and the foundation are exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (the code). However, income from certain activities not directly related to the university's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. In addition, the university has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a private foundation within the context of section 509(a) of the code. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the university and recognize a tax liability if the university has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by various federal and state taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the university, and has concluded that as of april 30, 2022 and 2021, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the accompanying financial statements. The university is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The university has filed its federal income tax returns for periods through april 30, 2021. These income tax returns are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the later of the date the return was filed or its due date (including approved extensions).
