Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The primary objective of the investments for the endowment fund is to adequately support the university's current financial needs while preserving assets for future generations by providing long-term growth of income and principal.

PART X, LINE 2:

The university and the foundation are exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (the code). However, income from certain activities not directly related to the university's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. In addition, the university has been determined by the internal revenue service not to be a private foundation within the context of section 509(a) of the code. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the university and recognize a tax liability if the university has taken an uncertain position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by various federal and state taxing authorities. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the university, and has concluded that as of april 30, 2021, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the accompanying financial statements. The university is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. The university has filed its federal income tax returns for periods through april 30, 2020. These income tax returns are generally open to examination by the relevant taxing authorities for a period of three years from the later of the date the return was filed or its due date (including approved extensions).

IRS990/Desc0FRONTIER NURSING UNIVERSITY (FNU) HAS BEEN PROVIDING QUALITY EDUCATION TO NURSES SEEKING ADVANCED DEGREES SINCE 1939. FRONTIER NURSING UNIVERSITY CONTINUES TO BE THE LEADING SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES FOR NURSE- MIDWIFERY EDUCATION, GRADUATING OVER ONE-THIRD OF NEW NURSE-MIDWIVES ANNUALLY. OUR OTHER PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO GROW AND WE HAVE A CADRE OF OVER 8,000 ALUMNI WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE AS PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS DAILY IN THE LIVES OF COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE, PARTICULARLY THOSE IN RURAL AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. FNU GRADUATES ARE PROVIDING PRIMARY HEALTHCARE TO RURAL AND UNDERSERVED FAMILIES IN EVERY STATE IN THE UNITED STATES AS WELL AS SEVERAL FOREIGN COUNTRIES. THE QUALITY AND ACADEMIC RIGOR OF A FRONTIER NURSING UNIVERSITY EDUCATION ARE EVIDENT IN THE CERTIFICATION PASS RATES OF OUR GRADUATES. CERTIFICATION RESULTS FROM 2020 REVEALED THAT FRONTIER FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER GRADUATES HAD A 99% PASS RATE, COMPARED TO AN 84% NATIONAL AVERAGE, NURSE-MIDWIFERY GRADUATES HAD AN 88% PASS RATE, COMPARED TO AN 87% NATIONAL AVERAGE, AND WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE NURSE PRACTITIONER GRADUATES HAD A 99% PASS RATE, COMPARED TO A 94% NATIONAL AVERAGE, PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER GRADUATES HAD A 93% PASS RATE, COMPARED TO AN 81% NATIONAL AVERAGE.IN ADDITION TO FNU'S FOCUS ON RURAL AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, THE UNIVERSITY HAS MADE A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN NURSE-MIDWIFERY AND NURSE PRACTITIONER EDUCATION. THE GOAL IS TO DIVERSIFY THE HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE WHICH HAS BEEN SHOWN TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE OUTCOMES. SINCE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FNU PRIDE INITIATIVE (PROMOTING RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN NURSE-MIDWIFERY AND NURSE PRACTITIONER EDUCATION) IN 2010, WHICH SPEARHEADED MANY TARGETED RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES, FNU HAS INCREASED THE STUDENT OF COLOR ENROLLMENT FROM 9% IN 2010 TO 25% IN 2020. THIS SUCCESS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE MARKETING EFFORT TARGETING PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. ADVERTISEMENTS, CONFERENCES, EVENTS, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON REACHING AND RECRUITING NEW STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS.FNU HAS ALSO HELD ANNUAL THREE-DAY DIVERSITY IMPACT STUDENT CONFERENCES SINCE THE PRIDE INITIATIVE BEGAN. THE PURPOSE OF THE DIVERSITY IMPACT CONFERENCE IS TO ENSURE THAT NURSE PRACTITIONERS AND NURSE-MIDWIVES UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY DIVERSITY IN RURAL AND UNDERSERVED HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS. MOREOVER, DIVERSITY IMPACT ADVANCES SOLUTIONS TO THE DISPARITIES IN HEALTH CARE OUTCOMES. TO FURTHER DEMONSTRATE ITS ONGOING COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION, FNU CREATED THE POSITION OF CHIEF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION OFFICER (CDIO) IN 2017. THIS POSITION IS A MEMBER OF THE PRESIDENT'S CABINET AND IS LEADING NOT ONLY EFFORTS TO RECRUIT A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY, BUT ALSO TO
