Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of la cocina is to cultivate low-income food entrepreneurs as they formalize and grow their businesses by providing affordable commercial kitchen space, industry-specific technical assistance and access to market opportunities. We focus primarily on women from communities of color and immigrant communities. Our vision is that entrepreneurs will become economically self-sufficient and contribute to a vibrant economy doing what they love to do.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Catering services of the program chair and a board member were used during the year totaling $77,426. A board member is a community affairs manager for a bank that provides grants and sponsorships to the organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The tax accountant prepares the 990 which is reviewed by la cocina's external accountant and cfo. The finance committee then reviews and approves the final draft at which time the completed and approved 990 is sent to the full board and is also filed by the tax accountant.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Enforcement of conflicts policy the board, directors, and key employees are annually required to review and acknowledge the conflict of interest policy. Additionally, they are each required to bring any possible conflicts to the board's attention prior to entering into the transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

15a-compensation process for top official compensation is determined by the board of directors. The board of directors does a comprehensive review of director level salaries for the non-profit industry, targeting organizations of similar size and/or similar business and projections for whether there needs to be structural shift in salaries. 15b-compensation process for officers the executive director's performance is reviewed(separately from the compensation survey) via a board/selected staff survey. The deputy director's income is proposed by the executive director and approved by the board.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization evaluates its uncertain tax positions and will recognize a loss contingency when it is probable that a liability has been incurred as of the date of the financial statements and the amount of the loss can be reasonably estimated. The amount recognized is subject to estimate and management judgment with respect to the likely outcome of each uncertain tax position. The amount that is ultimately sustained for an individual uncertain tax position or for all uncertain tax positions in the aggregate could differ from the amount recognized. As of june 30, 2024 and 2023 management did not identify any uncertain tax positions.
