Break Away's mission is to inspire and activate thoughtful community engagement through justice-based trainings and programs.We envision a society of people who prioritize just and equitable community through their values and actions.

Break Away's mission is to train, assist and connect campuses and communities in promoting quality alternative break programs that inspire lifelong active citizenship. The organization also provides membership services to colleges and university campuses as well as regional and national training to students and staff and online resources to support active citizenship.

IRS990/Desc0Break Away operated the following programs in 2018:Alternative Break Citizenship schools (ABCs)The ABCs are experiential training sessions that provide campus leaders the knowledge, skills, and connections they need to start or strengthen a quality alternative break program. During four week-long conferences, we train approximately 300 campus leaders from almost as many communities across the country. We work with hundreds of community members and leaders who represent dozens of non-profit organizations in each of the four communities we host the conference in.Student/Staff Leader TrainingsBreak Away conducts regional trainings tailored to the specific needs of individual or multiple campuses. Break Away works directly with host institutions to develop a tailored training experience that will give campus leaders the tools they need to be effective leaders and facilitators of lifelong active citizenship. On average, we conduct 30 trainings annually with close to 1,500 participants in total. MembershipBreak Away offers campuses and community organizations membership services - online resources, networking opportunities, consultation - to grow or sustain their programming. We currently work with almost 250 campuses and more than 600 community organizations both nationally and internationally.
