NAMI is an acronym for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It is the largest advocacy organization in the country for those living with a mental illness. NAMI Pinellas County, Florida, provides education, support and advocacy for individuals and families affected by mental illness to help them cope wiht the challenges they face living with mental illnesses. Volunteers facilitate support groups, teach classes about managing mental illnesses, and advocate for funding and services to help not only those with mental illness, but also their families.

| Education/Training- Education Programs that NAMI Pinellas offers are Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, and NAMI Smarts. These are courses open to the community, free of charge to register. Family-to-Family is a course for family members of people living with a mental illness who seek to gain insight and understanding of the illness and how to manage the challenges associated with the illness. This class was offered 3 times during the fiscal year of 2014-2015 with approximately 35 graduates and has been offered twice already for the FY 2015-2016, ending in November 2015 and December 2015 with approximately 24 graduates total. Peer-to-Peer is a course for individuals living with a mental illness designed to teach the person more abut their mental illness and ways to prevent relapse and live in recovery. This course was offered twice during the FY 2014-2015 with approximately 22 graduates and has been offered once for the FY 2015-2016, in December 2015 already with 9 graduates. Once an individual graduates, they do not need to take the course again but are encouraged to attend the support groups as needed. NAMI Smarts for Advocacy training was offered twice in June 2015 for people passionate about raising awareness for the mental health needs of our community. One for Module 1 and another class for Module 2 for people. There were approximately 25 graduates total from these courses.Train the trainers: Train the trainers is an opportunity offered by NAMI National for volunteers who have been trained as facilitators/mentors/teachers/presenters, to attend a three day training to be able to lead the class to train a volunteer to become a facilitator/mentor/teacher. June 2014, NAMI Pinellas sent three volunteers to attend a National Train-the-trainers training. Two to be trained as Peer-to-Peer mentor trainers and one to be trained as a Family-to-Family Teacher trainer. CIT- Crisis Intervention Team is a concerted effort made by the community mental health centers and law enforcement to enhance the knowledge base of law enforcement officers and first responders to be able to assess a mental health crisis opposed to a criminal act. NAMI Pinellas assists with implementing 2 C.I.T. education courses annually as a participant in the C.I.T. committee. Approximately 80 law enforcement officers are trained annually through this program in Pinellas County. This is in an effort to raise public and stakeholder awareness through education and outreach, establishing and disseminating recommended standards for developing, implementing and sustaining crisis intervention programs, providing assistance to communities interested in developing CIT programs, supporting research, improving public health and safety, evaluation of CIT programs and partnering with CIT programs in various localities to hold annual International CIT Conferences. | $29,591 | $21,284 |
| Conferences- Each year, NAMI National holds an annual conference that offers opportunities for trained NAMI facilitators, teachers, staff, and volunteers to attend workshops to increase their knowledge base of mental health information/training/resources pertaining to the service they offer. Approximately 120 different workshops are offered over the course of 4-5 days during each annual conference. Additionally, opportunities to network and learn from other NAMI volunteers are also offered during this time. From July 1st 2014 to June 30th 2015, in September 3-6, 2014 we sent 7 volunteers and 1 staff member to the NAMI Nation Conference and from July 1st 2015 to present, we sent 10 volunteers July 6th-9th, 2015. C.I.T. conferences are held annually and are another opportunity for NAMI Pinellas volunteers involved as presenters or on the C.I.T. committee to attend in an effort to remain knowledgeable of current C.I.T. efforts for the purpose of disseminating the information back into our community through law enforcement officers and advocates. | Community Outreach - NAMI Pinellas' primary mission is focused on outreach by making mental health resources and information available to the community, free of charge. The primary outreach services offered through NAMI Pinellas are NAMI Signature programs, support groups, Education Meetings, community presentations/provider information, school presentations, two NAMI helplines, community information/resource vendor fairs, Crisis Intervention Team trainings for law enforcement and first responders, mental health advocacy efforts, and the dissemination of information through NAMI/mental health literature by means of meetings, hospital discharge packets, face-to-face interactions, etc. | $25,463 | $10,141 |
| Support Services- Offers two helplines, one for consumer support and one for family member support. Between 50-80 calls are received monthly from these helplines. There is a weekly consumer support group offered, where approximately 20 people attend each week. The consumer support group called, "NAMI COnnection Recovery Support Group" is a free, peer-led support group for adults living with mental illness who will gain insight from hearing the challenges and successes of others, and the groups are led by NAMI-trained facilitators whove been there. NAMI Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. Family members will gain insight from the challenges and successes of others facing similar circumstances. NAMI Pinellas offers two family support groups monthly, with approximately 25 people attending those each month.
