FCAN is engaged for the common good, advancing community, compassion, democracy, justice, freedom and opportunity. Mission

The Florida Consumer Action Network (FCAN) is a grassroots organization which empowers citizens to influence public policy by organizing and educating in areas where consumer voices are underrepresented. FCAN advocated for a more democratic and just Florida. We address economic, political, social and environmental justice issues. Our actions include issue campaigns, registering voters, get out the vote, and media work and public education. FCAN is engaged for the common good, advancing community, compassion, democracy, justice, freedom and opportunity. We work with national partners including Fair Share, Consumer Federation of America, People's Action and similar national organizations.

Community Organizing: Outreach to grassroots organizations and activists; coalition and membership meetings, leadership development, training, and research to support the Board's projects; maintenance of relationships with statewide media; contact with government bodies on FCAN issues. FCAN maintains ongoing communications with many allied organizations. Public Outreach: FCAN communicates with members in many ways including email alerts, web site, blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. FCAN mails updates to donors. FCAN does extensive media work to educate the public on consumer and environmental issues including press releases, media briefings, editorial board meetings, letters to the editor, and op eds.

Sustainable Transportation - FCAN did more work to promote Complete Streets in St. Pete and in the region. FCAN did public education and organizing on transportation issues especially making the region more sustainable. Complete Streets are streets designed for all road users, including people on foot, on bike or taking transit and can help address safety and public health problems. The region lags regions of similar size in this area.$0$30,000
Insurance - FCAN is active educating, empowering, and organizing consumers on all lines of insurance, focusing on homeowner, auto, health, and insurance fraud. FCAN is an active participant in the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud and the Consumer Federation of America. We sought reforms in auto insurance to bring down sky-high rates and eliminate discrimination on income, education, and employment. We worked to extend health insurance benefits to more Floridians that are left out of current programs. Another initiative was educating the public on use of consumer information by insurers with artificial intelligence systems.$0$16,500
Auto Buying Consumer Education - FCAN used media and video to educate consumers for the car buying experience. We made insider tips available and explained concepts such as pricing the loan and how to accurately compare prices. A web page with a series of educational videos is available.$0$10,000
COVID-19 responsibility. FCAN worked to keep businesses responsible for careless actions that might infect consumers with the dangerous COVID virus. Our social media ads let consumers know when and where meetings were taking place and how to participate.
