“The finance committee of the board of trustees approves the form 990 before it is filed.”
“Annually, the museum sends the conflict of interest policy to each board member, with the requirement that it must be signed and returned to the organization within 30 days of the board member's receipt of policy. Service on the board is contingent upon the completion of the form.”
“The executive committee of the board of trustees annually evaluates the performance of the executive director in person and provides them with feedback from the executive committee and the entire board of trustees received during the course of the year. Compensation is determined by the executive committee and is based on performance and an analysis of compensation paid for similar positions in similar organizations as determined by the executive committee.”
“The museum makes its form 990 available to the public upon request and on their website.”
“The museum allows the public to view its form 990 and financial statements on their website.”
“In 2022, the tampa museum of art's permanent collection comprised over 7,541 objects. The museum primarily collects classical antiquities (625 objects), 19th-century photography and prints emphasizing works that relate to the classical collection (approximately 1,300 objects), modern and contemporary art in a variety of media (over 5,615 objects), with an emphasis on photography, art created after 1970, and new media. The museum collects works by nationally and internationally recognized artists in a range of techniques and mediums, many of whom have ties to florida and the tampa bay region. The museum recognizes that its acquisitions today are setting standards for future collecting activity and building a foundation for exhibitions and education programming. The museum celebrated its 102nd anniversary in 2022 and opened its new vinik education center, 8,000 square feet of additional education program space redesigned from back-of-the-house dry storage space in may. A new grand education lobby accommodating general visitors entering the museum on the east side of the building was designed to welcome two- to three-school busloads of students on tour at the museum and provide for offering sequestered entrance to classes while the galleries are closed post-5:00 pm. The center now boasts two new classroom facilities dedicated to two- and three-dimensional art with a focus on assemblage, collage, life drawing, and painting as well as wheel-throwing, coil building, and slab rolling classes. A docent/volunteer lounge was designed to accommodate resources and a conference area for our tour guides and a new room designed for a kiln was opened. The only existing classroom prior to redesign was renovated to offer tech classes in graphic design, digital photography, and multi-media editing and producing, and the flat floor lecture hall was redesigned to also offer regional art exhibitions and family education programs. The results were immediate. The museum quadrupled its camps and classes and started offering student classes year-round. In 2022, the museum saw close to 10,000 education program participants. Throughout the year, the tampa museum of art continued to raise revenue and allocate its resources toward program management and presentation of collections, collections care, and management, and provide a robust schedule of exhibition and education programs to serve the tampa bay community, albeit virtual as well as in person. As a result of completing the renovation of the west lobby to the museum, increasing our square footage of the store, and redesigning the first-floor atrium into a sculpture gallery we completed the transformation of 6,000 square feet of redesigned public spaces on the first floor of the museum. Additionally, the museum onboarded a new 3,000-square-foot gallery on the second floor and relocated the storage of the permanent collection into a new 4,000-square-foot storage room. This allowed us to extend three exhibitions into 2022 and feature an additional ten important traveling and in-house curated exhibitions for the tampa bay community and beyond, each outlined briefly below. An irresistible urge to create: florida outsider art from the monroe family collection on view through may 22, 2022 during the last several decades, the work of outsider artists has come to the forefront of our thinking about the nature of art as their paintings and sculptures have made their way into fine art museums hanging alongside new and time-tested paintings and sculptures. To date, collector gary monroe has acquired nearly a thousand pieces of outsider art, including works by ruby williams, eddy mumma, frank ritchie, and jesse aaron. An irresistible urge to create included 86 works and feature objects by several self-taught artists from florida's west coast and central region. A publication accompanies the exhibition with an essay by gary monroe, a discussion by boca museum of art senior curator kathy goncharov about the changin”
“Dawoud bey & carrie mae weems: in dialogue july 21 - october 23, 2022 dawoud bey & carrie mae weems: in dialogue is organized by the grand rapids art museum, with presenting support generously provided by millerknoll. Additional support is provided by wege foundation, agnes gund, the national endowment for the arts, and eenhoorn, llc. Dawoud bey & carrie mae weems: in dialogue brings together a focused selection of work from a period of over forty years by two of today's most important and influential photo-based artists. Dawoud bey and carrie mae weems, both born in 1953, came of age during a period of dramatic change in the american social landscape. Since meeting at the studio museum in harlem in 1976, the two artists have been intellectual colleagues and companions. Over the following five decades, bey and weems have explored and addressed similar themes: race, class, representation, and systems of power, creating work that is grounded in specific african american events and realities while simultaneously speaking to a multitude of human conditions. This exhibition, for the first time, brings their work together to shed light on their unique trajectories and modes of presentation, and their shared consciousness and principles. This exhibition pairs the two artists' work in five sections that emphasize both their distinct artistic approaches and their shared interests and concerns: early work, broadening the scope, resurrecting black histories, memorial and requiem, and revelations in the landscape. Also featured in the exhibition are videos by bey and weems that show their approaches to the moving photographic image as an extension of their still photographic series. Purvis young: redoux june 18, 2022 through june 30, 2024 inspired by the success of the exhibition purvis young: 91 in 2019, the museum will remount its purvis young collection as one of the first several long-term displays of the permanent collection. In 2024, the rubell family foundation gifted 91 paintings to the museum by young (american, 1943-2010). Based on the overtown neighborhood of miami, florida, young's paintings reflect his observations of daily life and the fight for social justice, hope for his community, immigration, and otherness, as well as the fragile balance between life and death. He rendered his work on found objects, items he discovered in this neighborhood. Discarded wood, windows, furniture fragments, cabinets, doors, carpet, fabric, string, and cables. Although his means were limited, young is recognized across the globe for his remarkable painting practices and his contributions to the cultural landscape of florida. All in favor: new works in the permanent collection june 20, 2022, through july 23, 2023 over the past five years, the tampa museum of art has received a record number of gifts to the permanent collection. The exhibition, all in favor: new works in the permanent collection, highlights the many recent works that have entered tma's holdings, ranging from ancient glass and bronze objects to contemporary paintings and sculptures from today's leading artists. Artists on view include the collective assume vivid astro focus (avaf), christo, jane corrigan, mitchell johnson, suchitra mattai, simphiwe ndzube, roger palmer, daisy patton, jaume plensa, claudia ryan, john scott, and others. Collections may be described as the heart of any museum. At their best, collections should inspire museum staff and influence exhibition and education programming. More importantly, collections should reflect the community at large and create a lasting impression on visitors. It is common for museum objects to become like old friends, with visitors returning, again and again, to see their favorite work or artist in view. Acquisitions, or works collected by a museum, can define a museum, and tell its story. These objects not only reflect the institution's evolving vision and mission over time but also highlight socio-political events and ideologies,”
“The museum was proud to have presented a wide range of education opportunities to the public. With a strong emphasis on educating the public about modern, contemporary, and ancient art, 2022 programs at the museum included one ongoing exhibition dedicated to ancient greek and roman art and eight other curated exhibitions informing the content of a dozen monthly education program offerings. To enhance the voice of the staff, 25% of the exhibitions were leased from and curated by nationally recognized institutions and their staff, professional teaching artists were employed to instruct studio art classes, and guest scholars, artists, and collectors were engaged to share specialized instruction and information in formal and informal public presentations. In carrying out our mission, reaching our objectives, and providing activities to the community, the museum partners with arts agencies and community non-profit organizations. In 2022, the museum enjoyed partnerships with the tampa bay foundation for mental health and the university of south florida honors college for connections, a free mental healthcare community art engagement program. In addition, connections as a credited capstone course in the honors college of usf, 2022 resumed with the training of 40 student facilitators to deliver gallery programs to community participants, and usf invested in a half-time twenty-hour a-week intern to work at the museum to administer the connections program. Internships were also ongoing as a result of a relationship with the university of tampa (ut). In 2022, the university of tampa continued to generously fund a half-time social media internship for a student to work in the museum's marketing and communications division. In addition, art therapy students at ut assisted the museum in providing art space, an art education outreach program for those economically if not environmentally disadvantaged, we worked with the spring, which provides support for victims of domestic violence; redefining refuge, which provides support for victims of human trafficking; and portico, a branch of the hyde park methodist church providing services to the homeless in downtown tampa. The museum also continued their partnership with the lightning foundation and the vinik family foundation in our youth council and the community heroes program, which provided teenagers with work experience in teaching other teens how to develop, manage, and market museum programs for teenagers. The studio art program at the museum in 2022 quadrupled its offerings on site with the opening of the vinik education center, moving from 112 registrants for summer camps and classes to over 400 with a waiting list and watching our students' taking classes and visiting the galleries on tour increase from 6,000 to 10,000 visitors. We also continued our partnership with the city of tampa and hillsborough county and the jewish community center to offer offsite classes at the jcc for youth and adults. In 2022 the off-site studio art programs continued with winthrop arts factory in riverview, firehouse cultural center in ruskin, and county recreation centers in thonotosassa, west chase, and keystone. These were but a few of the annual partnerships in place at the opening of 2022. Teacher previews were held in the spring and the fall of 2022 and teachers from all over the county were invited into the museum for free, to see how the art can be incorporated into their classroom experience; these programs were designed to be cross-curricular linked to florida standards. A museum funded resource, art line offered free bus trips to and from the tampa museum of art for k-12 school groups participating in our free school tours program, each subsidized and sponsored by individuals and corporations. We felt fortunate we were able to use those funds and carry forward some of those scholarships to 2022. The museum offered evening lectures virtual and in-person discussions related to exhibitions on display”
“The process for oversight of the audit and selection of an independent accountant has not changed from the prior year.”
“The organization accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The organization has identified its tax status as a tax -exempt entity as its only significant tax position; however, the organization has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The organization is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. The organization's federal returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.”
