IRS990/Desc0THE CHILDREN'S LITERACY COMMITTEE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, HAS THE GOAL OF PROMOTING LITERACY SKILLS TO CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN TITLE 1 AND RENAISSANCE SCHOOLS. BY HOSTING 12 FAMILY LITERACY NIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TAMPA VOLUNTEERS WERE ABLE TO SHOWCASE AND TRAIN PARENTS ON EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE LITERACY IN THE HOME; DISTRIBUTED BOOKS TO ESTABLISH AND INCREASE A HOME LIBRARY; AND BROUGHT IN SPEAKERS THAT FURTHER EDUCATED FAMILIES ON HOW TO ENHANCE THEIR CHILD'S LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THIS COMMITTEE ALSO SENT 64 TRAINED VOLUNTEERS INTO CLASSROOMS ACROSS HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY TO READ TO STUDENTS EACH MONTH. LAST YEAR, 420 STUDENTS EXPERIENCED 30-MINUTE READING SESSIONS EACH MONTH AND WERE GIFTED A BOOK TO TAKE HOME DURING EACH VISIT TO BUILD THEIR OWN HOME LIBRARY. THE CHILDREN'S LITERACY COMMITTEE WAS ALSO ENGAGED DURING THE FAMILY FOOD FEST IN THE SULPHUR SPRINGS COMMUNITY. VOLUNTEERS HOSTED EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES THAT SERVED TO PROMOTE READING AND JOURNALING DURING SUMMER MONTHS TO HELP PREVENT THE SUMMERTIME SLIDE. AN ADDITIONAL 1,000 BOOKS WERE ALSO DISTRIBUTED TO FESTIVAL PARTICIPANTS. IN 2013-2014, APPROXIMATELY 11,518 BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH EXTENDED TO 2,097 PEOPLE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EVERY YEAR, APPROXIMATELY 2,000 CHILDREN IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, AGED NEWBORN TO 17 YEARS OLD, ARE REMOVED FROM THEIR HOMES TO PROTECT THEM FROM ISSUES OF NEGLECT, ABUSE OR CRIMINAL CHARGES. THESE CHILDREN ARE REMOVED FROM THEIR HOME WITHOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ANY THEIR BELONGINGS. LOVE BUNDLES IS A PROJECT THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TAMPA HAS FORMED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE (HCSO). A COMMITTEE OF JUNIOR LEAGUE VOLUNTEERS PACKS BACKPACKS CONTAINING A SET OF CLOTHING, TOILETRIES, BOOKS, COMFORT ITEMS AND SNACK FOOD TO EASE THE TRANSITION INTO FOSTER CARE FOR THE CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN RECEIVE THEIR "LOVE BUNDLE" WITHIN 24 HOURS OF BEING REMOVED FROM THEIR HOME. DURING THE 2013-2014 YEAR, VOLUNTEERS IN THE LOVE BUNDLES PROJECT PROVIDED 2,700 "LOVE BUNDLES" THAT WERE DISTRIBUTED BY THE HCSO AND THE CHILDREN'S HOME.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc01 IN 4 SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN IN TAMPA ARE HUNGRY. THEY ARE LIVING IN HOMES WHERE FOOD IS SCARCE. THESE CHILDREN ARE DEPENDENT ON RECEIVING MOST OF THEIR MEALS AT THEIR SCHOOL AND/OR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. WHEN WEEKENDS ARRIVE, THESE CHILDREN ARE UNDERFED, AND RETURN TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY MORNING HUNGRY. THIS INTERFERES WITH THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN AND EXCEL. FOOD 4 KIDS IS A PROJECT THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TAMPA ESTABLISHED TO OVERCOME THIS HUNGER DEFICIT. VOLUNTEERS PACK AND DISTRIBUTE BAGS OF NUTRITIOUS FOOD THAT WILL ALLOW A FAMILY OF FOUR TO EAT BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER OVER EACH WEEKEND AND ANY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. THIS ALLOWS THE CHILDREN TO FEEL NOURISHED AND GIVES THEM THE ABILITY TO FOCUS ON LEARNING. DURING THE 2013-2014 FISCAL YEAR, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TAMPA DISTRIBUTED 13,824 BAGS OF FOOD TO MORE THAN 384 CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES AT VARIOUS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO DISTRIBUTING FOOD BAGS, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TAMPA ALSO HOSTED A MOBILE FOOD PANTRY IN THE SULPHUR SPRINGS COMMUNITY DURING OUR INAUGURAL FAMILY FOOD FEST. THE FOOD PANTRY PROVIDED FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, DAIRY AND MEAT TO OVER 300 FAMILIES.
