Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Miro dance theatre's mission is the creation, presentation, and touring of new dance work combining the artistry of ballet trained dancers, contemporary choreographers, and video.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Girard college residency - in exchange for studio and office space on campus, miro provides two hours of dance instruction weekly to girard college students in grades 6-12 along with a professional company protocol. The students have access to models of successful administrative and artistic careers in the arts, as well as visiting artists, both local and international. The students create a new work and perform it for the public, student body and faculty at girard college.in 2011, the number of students served was 36 and the audiences for their performances approximated 400.
Activity 3
Educational programming - miro has traditionally promoted increased audience interaction and education of that audience through its free open studio series, where we share work in different stages of development. After each open studio, we have an active talk-back session. This invaluable back and forth with both our dedicated and newer audience members allows us a window into our audiences understanding of developing work. It also allows them to engage with our process in ways that promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the completed work. There were 3 events in 2011 that served an estimated 450 in audience.mash-ups are an expansion of the companys long-running open studio series and give our audience insight into some of miros collaborative processes. We bring together live musical artists, special guests, and miro dancers for a three-day creation period, then show the results at the end. Mash-ups are a primary way of reaching new audiences through community and organizational partnerships and the geographic diversity of presentation locations. There were 3 events in 2011 that served an estimated 60 in audience.miro is currently in the process of expanding these programs, creating an educational initiative that makes open studios, mash-ups, and several stand alone workshops and classes available to local universities and community groups in residency format. We are creating a curriculum that would be adaptable to the needs of different institutions and community groups as they are finding it more fiscally difficult to house long term programs within their own walls. We desire to be a valuable cultural asset to the greater philadelphia community, sharing international collaborations, creative processes, and new works through community engagement and outreach.
