Activity 2

Community sponsorship: funding of the lake rabun fund (maintained by the north georgia community foundation): provides seven (7) annual scholarships to rabun county students: six (6) scholarships for students attending accredited higher learning institutions and one (1) scholarship for a student attending a technical school. (7) scholarships for students attending higher learning institutions are awarded each year providing $2,000 per year for four years. One scholarship for a student attending a technical school is awarded each year providing $1,000 per year for two years. The lake rabun fund currently has 27 students actively sharing $51,000 in annual scholarship funding. Sponsor of the lakemont wiley rabun country volunteer fire department for maintenance of the lakes fire boat, fire boat house, equipment and general operations. The lake rabun fund also supports the lakemont wiley volunteer fire department through the establishment of an escrow fund to be used for future major capital equipment needs.

Activity 3

Advocate for boater and water safety: facilitates & sponsors the annual boater safety education and certification class taught by the department of natural resources. Over 40 people received certification in 2012. The boater safety committee, working in concert with the ga dnr and lakemont wiley volunteer fire department, enacted post fireworks procedure providing two dnr boats and the fireboat on the lake to ensure boater safety on july 4th, which resulted in an accident free holiday. Sponsors off duty rabun county sheriffs deputy to ride with ga dnr officer during peak busy times in the summer.
