“Spalding county voluntary organizations active in disaster (voad) the spalding county voluntary organizations active in disaster (voad) sprang to action within 24 hours of the january 12,2023 tornado to assist with response and relief efforts for families impacted by the disaster that devastated portions of spalding county. Voad is a network of non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations, civic organizations, businesses, schools, and local government entities, anchored by the spalding collaborative. Individuals and families were helped with rent, utilities, household items, damaged or destroyed vehicles, and equipment needed for work. For the next 18-24 months, the work of voad will continue to help the community with unmet needs through long-term recovery assisted by partner organizations. The united methodist committee on relief (umcor) and lutheran disaster response-evangelical lutheran church in america (lds- elca) trained and supported staff to work with homeowners, assess construction costs, and propose a plan for repairing and rebuilding. Voad's resource allocation committee (rac) is responsible for implementation oversight. The salvation army is developing a similar fema funded disaster case management team to assist in the long-term recovery effort. Volunteers and mission teams assist with carpentry, sheetrock,flooring,painting, and similar tasks to help bring down the costs so more survivors can be helped.”
“Backpack food program in an effort to make sure students have enough food during weekends throughout the school year, spalding collaborative partners are offering to send nutritious, child-friendly food home on fridays in the backpack of students at highest risk of hunger. The free program is being offered to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at selected elementary schools. Breakfast, lunch, and a snack are provided for each two-day weekend during the school year. The program is aimed to help families who are working hard to provide basic needs during difficult economic times. Eligible students are identified by school counselors and staff who invite the parent/guardian to enroll in the program for the student.”
