At atlanta girls school (ags), we teach girls to be world-class problem solvers. Our curriculum and culture emerge from a distinct vision of what girls must learn individually and collectively to become thoughtful and capable leaders. Ags provides a challenging college-preparatory program in a learning environment designed to foster the full potential of each student and to enable her to become a vital contributor to our complex global society. We achieve this by using proven and emerging educational techniques tailored to how girls learn, integrating big-picture thinking, high expectations, and leading-edge technologies. Our girls learn to take appropriate risks, be courageous leaders, give back to their communities, and project personal confidence and competence in all they do.

The atlanta girls' school provides a challenging college preparatory program in a learning environment designed to foster the full potential of each student.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XI, Line 9

The school received signed norman rockwell prints from the family of an alumna. For financial statement purposes, no contribution value was reported related to these prints. However, for purposes of reporting noncash donations on schedule m, a value of $1,500 was assigned to the donation and reported on part viii, line 1(g).

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

The permanent endowment funds are used to provide financial aid to families that have a demonstrated need. These funds are made available to both returning and new students based on demonstrated need. Gifts that are received with a donor imposed restriction are set aside as temporarily restricted funds. Funds are released from restriction when the actual cash has been expended on the program expense or capital item that corresponds with the donor's intent. At June 30, 2014, the School has approximately $450,000 in permanently restricted net assets available for scholarships. During the year ended June 30, 2014, the School had discussions with one donor who had previously provided an original gift of $250,000. In a previous fiscal year, the donor had agreed to the School releasing $69,300 of funds for scholarships with the expectation that the original gift of $250,000 be restored at a future date. During the year ended June 30, 2014, the School reclassified $67,413 of unrestricted net assets to permanently restricted net assets which restored the balance of the contribution to the original gift of $250,000.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The School is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, as amended. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes has been reflected in the accompanying financial statements. The School annually evaluates all federal and state income tax positions. This process includes an analysis of whether these income tax positions the School takes meet the definition of an uncertain tax position under the Income Taxes Topic of the Financial Accounting Standards Codification. In the normal course of business, the School is subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities. In general, the School is no longer subject to tax examinations for tax years ending before June 30, 2011.

Schedule D, Part XI, Line 2D

The audited financial statements include cost of goods sold as an expense. These costs have been netted against gross sales of inventory on Form 990, Part VIII, Line 10a-10c. Net Adjustment: ($8,477)

Schedule D, Part XI, Line 4B

The audited financial statements include financial aid as a negative offset to tuition income. These expenses have been included on Form 990, Part IX, Line 2. Additionally, rental income was offset to occupancy expense in the audited financial statements. For income tax purposes this revenue has been shown on Form 990, Part VIII, Line 6a. Also, THE SCHOOL RECEIVED SIGNED NORMAN ROCKWELL PRINTS FROM THE FAMILY OF AN ALUMNA. IRS990/Desc0AGS is committed to providing an excellent girls education to a student body that reflects the socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and religious diversity of Atlanta. To this end, AGS faculty deliver research-driven, girl-centered curricula to four boarding students from China and students from 48 zip codes across metro-Atlanta. Forty-three percent of our students are girls of color, and 32% of families receive financial aid. Over two-thirds of AGS teachers hold advanced degrees, and the School offers extensive professional development opportunities to enable highly qualified staff to maintain and enrich their specialized, girl-centered teaching methods based on the latest research. With an average class size of 13 students, faculty deeply invest in helping each student succeed and attain her full potential. Leading programs: The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Strand curriculum works across disciplines to fully engage a student's strengths and increase achievement, while utilizing design-thinking to drive technology and curriculum development. The STEAM Strand enables students to implement the scientific method observe, question, research, predict, experiment, analyze, explain to develop problem solving, graphical analysis, technology, and experimental design skills. The Education for the Development of Leadership and Service program sets AGS apart from its peer institutions by focusing on the critical role of service in the life of a responsible, global citizen. Students at every grade level undertake projects in philanthropy, public service, wellness, and environmental stewardship. To gain real-world experience, sophomores and juniors conduct internships of at least 70 hours. Most recently girls conducted, on average, 93 hours of work and service through their internships and provided more than 4,860 hours cumulatively at organizations such as Piedmont Hospital, Spaceworks, Children's Hospital of Atlanta, and Center for the Visually Impaired. Other students spent their internships studying neuroscience at Emory University, participating in App Design and Robotics at Georgia Techs design lab, and learning about environmental protection and sustainability at Integrated Environmental Services and Nexus Fuels. In selecting internships, girls are encouraged to explore their personal and career goals. These internships provide AGS girls with invaluable real world experiences, create academic and professional resources, and form a long-lasting understanding of the impact of the girls work in the world. The Global Travel Program requires upper school students to participate in at least one international trip. AGS is the only school in Atlanta to have such a requirement. The Global Travel Program offers students a myriad of global experiences ranging from exchange programs, to internships, to spring break educational trips. Students may study the intricate ecology of Belize or literature and European history in England. Students can attend school at St. Hildas School in Queensland, Australia or Schloss Neubeuern in Neubeuern, Germany. Students can also participate in community service internships like the one offered at a girls camp in India. Students who travel to Kenya participate in a two-week, elementary school teaching internship.
