In 2017, the second largest program area was the CRK water monitoring projects; we processed more than 4,961 water samples in our three laboratories. Through our Neighborhood Water Watch program, we were joined by 110 partner organizations and individuals at 163 sample stations. This effort led to the discovery and resolution of 15 major sewer spills. We completed eight years of nutrient monitoring at Lake Lanier and West Point Lake. All of our data was shared publicly on the CRK web site as well as Georgia Environmental Protection Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency web sites. We responded to 278 citizen hotline calls, conducted 240 field investigations, resulting in 33 enforcement actions. In addition, we investigated 170 industrial stormwater facilities.

Program Accomplisments

In 2017, the largest program area was the CRK community outreach and stewardship projects, which reached more people than ever before engaging 1,216 volunteers. CRK distributed 960 rain barrels and reached more than 13,000 people with the tools and knowledge to adopt water conservation and efficiency practices at home and in their businesses. CRK hosted two dozen river awareness events including the River Race and Festival, Member Celebration, River Revival, Film Festival, Patron Dinner. We removed 27.1 tons of trash from the watershed, and recycled 3.4 tons. CRK staff trained and managed 15 interns. We also educated 10,203 students and adults on board our two floating classrooms on Lake Lanier and West Point Lake. We hosted a two-day conference to explore the impacts of climate change on our watershed.
