“Schely senior center, inc. Has but one purpose - to support the ellaville-schley county senior center. Activities at the center to benefit the senior population fall into three main categories, social outlook, exercise and education. Specific activities are as follows: 1) the predominant and most expensive activity is meals. Scci buys meals from the middle flint council of aging. These meals are planned by a registered dietician with input of each participating senior center, and prepared in the council's central kitchen located in americus. They are provided to the local seniors in two different ways. The first is "congregate meals", hot noon meals which are those provided to the seniors who come to the center. The second type of meals are "home delivered". Scci contracts with middle flint council on aging for the delivery of meals to shut-ins. 2) planning and scheduling activities and 3) educational/inspirational presentations for the seniors is the next main purpose. These include daily and special activities at the center such as exercise, crafts, speakers on health, finance, hobbies, etc., holidays such as memorial day and mother's/father's day, regular devotions by local pastors, health clinics and others. Also a vital part of the senior program are field trips. Some of these are with other area senior centers. One of the most popular of these is the annual coa picnic held at the coa office in americus. Other trips have included visits to the nearby andersonville and plains national historic sites, the restored rylander theater in americus, and the peach packing shed in fort valley. Seniors also have special projects that have included, delivering christmas gifts to former schley county residents who are now in area nursing homes, collecting and distributing any essential items to families in need, and sponsoring teachers' appreciation day at the local schools.”
