“Turning point's core mission is to break the cycle of domestic abuse. We start by offering victims and their children a safe haven. In our shelter, they can begin to feel safe and take the steps needed to build violence- free lives. Our programs include individual and group counseling, identifying the cycle of domestic violence, money management, parenting skills, and housekeeping. Special attention is given to employment and self-sufficiency goals, since many victims have never been allowed to control the family finances. Job search coaching includes resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies and job referrals our trained case manager and volunteers work with residents to determine financial needs and create household budgets, structure debt payment and repair credit; helping families develop the skills to create a sound financial plan. 77% of the women who complete our programs maintain violence-free lives for at least one year after leaving the shelter. Children who are victims of domestic violence need special support. Without appropriate intervention, the effects of domestic abuse linger long after the violence has stopped. Studies show that children who observe family violence often display delayed physical and emotional development, experience health problems and poor performance in school. They are also more likely to become abusers or victims in future relationships. Our hero program breaks this generational cycle of abuse by helping children understand that healthy relationships are not violent. Learning how to express anger and other feelings appropriately makes it possible for them to have a future without violent relationships. 91% of the children participating in the hero program have demonstrated improved anger management and other positive coping skills. On july 1, 2015, turning point assumed the operations of the sexual assault resource center (sarc) and tree house children's advocacy center (cac) from safe alliance in union county. The sarc provides survivors of sexual assault with a 24/7 crisis line, hospital accompaniment, support groups, counseling, and advocacy appointments to assist with safety planning, crisis intervention, resource referrals, and court accompaniment. The tree house cac is a multi-disciplinary approach to child abuse investigations that provides forensic interviews, medical exams, trauma assessments, advocacy, counseling and support groups for children and their non- offending caregivers.”
