Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We are determined to alleviate homelessness by providing the resources for men to build a foundation on which they can transition to self-sufficiency. We recognize that these men have a need for structure, accountability, and ultimately hope for a brighter future. Our goal is to provide men the chance to escape the vicious cycle that is homelessness and addiction, helping them to become fulfilled and productive members of society.

Helping men who want to help themselves out of the unfortunate circumstances they find themselves in. We offer a comprehensive program that includes assistance with job placement, life skills and relapse prevention, transition housing, caseworker support, and placement into permanent housing upon completion of the program.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 4

The Board of Directors amended the By-Laws of the corporation in August 2016. The significant change approved was to Section 4.2 (Numbers, Tenure, and Qualifications) setting forth new guidelines for Board member terms of service (three years) and number of consecutive terms permitted (two). The Board will consist of no fewer than 7 members and no more than 15. Section 4.2(c) was amended to state the Board makeup "will reflect the diversity of the community." Section 4.4 was amended to reflect attendance requirements for the annual meeting and that a two week notice must be given. One provision concerning the need for an advisory committee from the residents of Matthew 2 5 was deleted, because the sense of the Board is that the staff is fulfilling this role.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization is exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is not a private foundation. Therefore, no provision for income taxes has been made. The Organization follows Financial Accounting Standards Board Accounting Standards Codification ("FASB ASC") guidance that clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an Organization's financial statements. This guidance prescribes a minimum probability threshold that a tax position must meet before a financial statement benefit is recognized. The minimum threshold is defined as a tax position that is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by the applicable taxing authority, including resolution of any related appeals or litigation processes, based on the technical merits of the position. The tax benefit to be recognized is measured as the largest amount of benefit that is greater than fifty percent likely of being realized upon ultimate settlement. The Organization has no tax penalties or interest reported in the accompanying financial statements. The Organization had no uncertain tax positions at June 30, 2017 and 2016. Tax years that remain open for examination include the years ended June 30, 2014 through June 30, 2017.

Matthew 25 works closely with homeless services providers to ensure our veterans as well as other individuals participating in the program are receiving the best possible care, are attending required meeting and medical appointments while working or seeking full time employment. Our veterans as well as other individuals participating in the program are required to have and maintain full time employment within 30 days, save $1000.00 dollars, and complete the 90 day program for our clients while a resident of Matthew 25. In 2017, Matthew 25, Inc. served 165 men, half of which were veterans. We continue to maintain sixteen permanent housing units. We served three meals a day, and provided counseling and case management using three social workers, and one alcohol and drug counselor. Two thirds of the participants graduated from the program into housing and employment.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PROGRESSIVE HOUSING:MATTHEW 25 ATTEMPTS TO MOVE HOMELESS MEN FROM HOUSING IN A GROUP SETTING TO INDIVIDUALIZED HOUSING. THIS IS A PERSONAL PROCESS BASED ON THE SKILLS AND PREPAREDNESS OF EACH PARTICIPANT. THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS FOR EACH PERSON TO HAVE A PLACE HE CAN CALL HOME AND FOR HIM TO MAINTAIN THAT HOME. One service the Matthew 25 staff provides is to secure offsite housing through Nashville area landlords for (6) single renters who have completed the Matthew 25 transitional program. This program is part of a program identified by Matthew 25 as Progressive Housing, which assists in subsidizing rent (in part through a Dept of HUD grant) as needed for up to a year for these individuals.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Another service Matthew 25 provides is to provide sixteen (16) low income housing units to single renters one floor above the site of the Matthew 25 transitional program. These units are rented primarily to individuals who have completed a transitional program but who will incur great difficulty in securing offsite housing on their own due to a prior felony conviction or insufficient income.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Organization is exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is not a private foundation.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Board of Directors amended the By-Laws of the corporation in August 2016.
