Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

Board members are sent the 990 via email. They are asked to review and provide any comments.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

The conflict of interest policy is written in organization bylaws. Bylaws and conflict of interest policies are reviewed yearly and included in new hire training. Board members and staff are required to state any conflicts of interest when they arise. The human resources committee and executive committe oversees this compliance.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The human resources committee reviews compensation, comparing it to other nonprofits with similar financials and geographic location. The full board votes on the compensation of key staff.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15B

Board members are not paid for their services. Board members may also be teachers and are paid as independent contractors for their services based on the organizations teaching compensation structure.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The muse writers center fosters and celebrates the literary arts throughout the community through high-quality education, networking, and support for aspiring and experienced writers of all ages, backgrounds, and means; engaging and creative outreach; and diverse and culturally relevant literary events.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

The muse writers center accomplished much in 2024,. We maintained our resource center for local writers, providing space for writers to write and network. We continued to catalog our literary library of more than 4,000 volumes, including a large international poetry collection. This year, we continued to emerge from the pandemic with in-person, hybrid, and online events, programs, and classes. We provided 216 low cost creative writing classes and workshops which served 1,256 students (from age 6 to post-retirement). Tuition assistance/scholarships were given to 400+ of these students, and we also awarded 4 college scholarships. In 2024, we utilized 87 contracted teaching artists and facilitators. The muse vastly expanded outreach, bringing creative writing to senior living communities, youth programs and schools, and military & veterans groups, as well as ramping up a pilot program to use creative writing as a wellness tool for those dealing with domestic trauma, loneliness, disability, homelessness, severe illness, bereavement, and loss. Overall in 2024, we helped give writers a voice, organizing readings, open mics, and writers events that reached nearly 12,000 adults, teens, and kids. We also had the good fortune to enjoy approximately 88 volunteers who donated their hard work to help with various events as well as in the resource center and with our online programming.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE MUSE WRITERS CENTER FOSTERS AND CELEBRATES THE LITERARY ARTS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY THROUGH HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION, NETWORKING, AND SUPPORT FOR ASPIRING AND EXPERIENCED WRITERS OF ALL AGES, BACKGROUNDS, AND MEANS; ENGAGING AND CREATIVE OUTREACH; AND DIVERSE AND CULTURALLY RELEVANT LITERARY EVENTS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE MUSE WRITERS CENTER ACCOMPLISHED MUCH IN 2024,.
