Profile

Support, Advocate, Empower and Protect Crime Victims' Rights is Mothers Against Murder's, "MAM" primary exempt purposes. Helping survivors of homicide, the family, friends and the community of the murdered victim, is the priority work at MAM. But, it's very difficult to turn away other types of crime victims who tend to find MAM after they have been re-victimized and re-traumatized by the justice system that is there to protect them, but the red tape bureaucracy fails the most vulnerable during the most difficult time of their lives. MAM becomes the expert voice to speak up for victims by moving up chain of commands, demanding accountability and transparency by the government agencies who hold the powers to bring justice to survivors. Mothers Against Murder, "MAM", is a very small nonprofit that is highly proactive, highly experienced victim of crime advocacy group that not just helps individual cases, but takes on the very large and bureaucratic systems to make the necessary changes.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Mothers Against Murder ("MAM") is dedicated to supporting, advocating for, empowering, and protecting the rights of crime victims. Our primary exempt purpose is to assist survivors of homicide, including the families, friends, and communities affected by these tragedies. While our core focus is on homicide survivors, MAM also frequently provides assistance to victims of other crimes who seek our support after experiencing additional trauma or systemic failures within the justice process. As a highly proactive and experienced crime-victim advocacy organization, MAM works not only on individual cases but also to address broader systemic issues. We advocate for accountability and transparency within government agencies, elevate victims' concerns through appropriate channels, and ensure that survivors' voices are recognized by the institutions responsible for delivering justice. Although small in size, MAM plays a critical role in challenging complex bureaucratic barriers.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Secured a Landmark Statewide Victory for Crime Victims Mothers Against Murder (MAM) won a California writ of mandate that restored victims' right to a fair appeals hearing after denials by the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB). This precedent-setting ruling now protects victims statewide from unlawful denials and ensures transparency, due process, and accountability in the state's compensation system. Provided Direct Advocacy and Crisis Assistance to Victims and Families MAM assisted homicide survivors, domestic violence victims, and families across California-often when no other agency would intervene. We helped victims navigate law enforcement, prosecutors' offices, and CalVCB, secured emergency services, and eliminated barriers that had prevented families from obtaining funeral reimbursements, wage-loss compensation, and other urgently needed support. Exposed Systemic Failures and Improved Government Accountability Through detailed case documentation, policy advocacy, and collaboration with journalists and community partners, MAM brought public attention to recurring failures in county victim witness centers and CalVCB. This work prompted reviews, corrections of mishandled claims, and increased oversight, driving improvements that benefit victims statewide.$0$4,268
MAM organized and hosted a major community event during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, bringing together multiple local community-based victim service organizations and every law enforcement agency in the county. We honored and acknowledged frontline professionals as the unsung heroes who serve crime victims, and we featured powerful victim impact speakers whose stories inspired action and awareness. The event received national media coverage, elevating the visibility of victims' rights and the critical need for meaningful support.$0$3,142
Court Accompaniment The court system is incredibly intimidating to survivors. Having to come in contact with the accused is traumatizing. This system was not designed with crime victims in mind. There is a huge need for this service. We have managed to help by accompanying survivors to court as much as time allows for this important service.$0$0
