Media/Communications/Advertising: Via The Urban News to heighten community awareness about Minority Infant Mortality Project EMPOWER (Education Means Power)Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI) Project EMPOWER (Education Means Power) is a program of Mount Zion Community Development, Inc. and Buncombe County's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative\ Project EMPOWER implemented the "Reducing the Risk" curriculum at Asheville High School during PE/Reproductive Health Classes for FY19 and after-school through Asheville City Schools Foundation's In Real Life Program (IRL) at the Montford North Star Academy. Reducing the Risk: a. An evidence-based curriculum designed to build Skills to Prevent Pregnancy, STDs & HIV. This 16-session program focused on the development of attitudes and skills that will help teens prevent pregnancy and the transmission of STDs, including HIV. b. This approach addresses skills such as risk assessment, communication, decision- making, planning, and refusal strategies. c. 213 students were served through Asheville High School & the School of Inquiry & Life Sciences at Asheville (SILSA). Of the 213 youth served, 207 met threshold by attending at least 75% of program sessions. d. Number of class sessions (83); Additional sessions held to establish rapport and reach program goals & outcomes. e. Number of Community Advisory Council Meetings (5) Making Proud Choices! a. An Evidence-Based, Safer-Sex Approach to Teen Pregnancy and HIV/STD Prevention is an 8-module curriculum that provides adolescents with the knowledge, confidence and skills necessary to reduce their risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV and pregnancy by abstaining from sex or using condoms if they choose to have sex. b. The intervention is based on cognitive-behavioral theories, focus groups and the authors' extensive experience working with youth. c. Implemented After-School at the Montford North Star Academy through Asheville City Schools Foundation's In Real Life (IRL) through the Asheville City Schools District. Additional Activities: A. Media/Communications/Radio: Radio Broadcasts via WRES 100.7 to heighten community awareness about Minority Infant Mortality. Listernership estimated to be 73,000 B. Media/Communications/Advertising: Via The Urban News to heighten community awareness about Minority Infant Mortality. Distribution rate: 17,000. C. Community Partnership with the Western N. C. AIDS Project who facilitated condom demonstration classes. D. Outreach & Collaboration with local agencies and partnerships to heighten community awareness about teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and STIs. E. Strategy for Parental Involvement: Educational mailings to Parents/Guardians. F. Incentives during classroom instruction.
