| LEARN: In the typical year Co-partners supports vocational training in two centers in El Salvador and underwrites scholarships in both El Salvador and Guatemala. Vocational classes in centers located in Ilobasco and Apastepueque, El Salvador, provide classes in dressmaking, tailoring, cosmetology, basic computer skills, electrical wiring, cooking, baking and English. In Guatemala, we provide $2,000 for scholarships of school supplies to 200 entering elementary school children and 2 scholarships for entering high school students $2,292. In El Salvador we provided $2,000 for tables and chairs to accommodate their expanding training activities. In the Apastepueque we invested $6,000 to fortify the electric system of the training center required by their use of industrial sewing machines and commercial hair dryers. The two training centers are significantly generating sufficient income through their training activities to cover operating expenses. During the year 12, 5-month classes were provided to 253 students. | $12,292 | $358 |
| EARN: The two vocational training centers in El Salvador enable participants to earn a living wage in the country of their birth rather than feeling the pull of immigration. The courses that are offered by the training centers provide opportunities to enter a new profession as either a sole practitioner or as a skilled employee of an ongoing business. There are many examples where graduates have made life changing outcomes. A recent graduate of the cosmetology and manicurist courses at the Apastepeque center applied her new skills leading her buying a small motor cycle that now offers access to a larger geographic area in combination with a food delivery service. An early female graduate of the residential electricity course set off to wire the stands of the outdoor market where she used to work. She then went into business with her two young sons. The wiring class is also attractive because graduates are credentialed to wire houses but also to inspect and signoff on wiring done by home owners, a requirement of municipal government. A women who sold in the outdoor market found it much more rewarding to work out of her home as a seamstress after taking the basic and advanced sewing classes. In Guatemala, where organization members of six communities are spread over a wide area, agricultural projects are emphasized. The women raising chickens and along with eggs add an important contribution to the family diet. They have also raise turkeys and pigs primarily for sale along with surplus eggs. | $2,000 | $358 |
| LEAD: In line with Copartners focus on women's empowerment, we provide material support to the women's organizations. Once a woman has completed her education and learned a skill that enables her to contribute to the economic support of the family, we encourage her to step up to leadership in her organization and her community. The three organizations supported by Copartners were all required to acquire legal status and open a bank account. All decisions regarding the classes to offer, pricing, recruitment of students, hiring of instructors, and managing money. Leadership of partner organizations also acquire skills as representatives of their organizations with local government officials, funding organizations and others. In support of this goal, Copartners offers leadership workshops for both women and youth annually. Over the years the experience acquired has led to leadership positions in their rural communities and civic and religious organizations. Leader ship training is largely provided by copartners volunteers and participation in training provided by local private and pubic organizations. | $239 | $150 |
