Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Before the 990 is filed with the irs, the executive committee reviews and recommends its approval to the full board. A complete copy of the form 990 is provided to each voting member of the board of directors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

When saf contracts with individuals or organizations, or hires individuals, management reviews the conflict of interest policy to ensure compliance. The board signs an annual pledge that includes the conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The salaries of the executive director and the assistant director are determined by a pay schedule added to the organization's personnel policies after saf's last union contract negotiation in 2022. The organizational capacity committee, which is made up of several board and staff members, reviewed the schedule, which mirrors the union contract in the way it determines initial salaries based on experience and annual pay raises. Saf has an additional policy that caps the top executive's salary at no more than twice that of the lowest-paid employee. The full board approves changes in personnel policies as recommended by the oc committee. All other employees are covered by the three-year union contract.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Saf's financial information is included in its annual report, which is emailed to all donors and posted on its website. Other documents are made available upon request. Saf makes its governing documents and conflict of interest policy available to the general public upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) on its exempt function income and is classified by the irs as a publicly supported organization. The organization is not aware of any unrelated business income for the years ended august 31, 2024, and 2023. The organization evaluates any uncertain tax positions. Accordingly, the organization's policy is to record a liability for any tax position taken that is beneficial to the organization, including any related interest and penalties, when it is more likely than not that the position of management with respect to a transaction or class of transactions will be overturned by a taxing authority upon examination. Management believes there are no such positions as of august 31, 2024, and 2023.
