In 2006 Pages Creek was designated as impaired by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality due to concerning levels of fecal bacteria affecting shellfish growing areas. This designation highlighted the urgent need for effective restoration strategies prompting the New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District to target Pages Creek in their 5-Year Strategic Plan for improvements. Together we have the opportunity to transform this vital region. Our Watershed Restoration Plan serves as a roadmap to enhance water quality and ecological health ultimately striving to remove these impaired stream segments from the 303d water list. This is not just a plan; it is a living document that evolves with new data ensuring we remain adept in our efforts to improve the watershed. New Hanover County is committed to using innovative water volume reduction techniques to decrease stormwater runoff by 10 to 20%. Through targeted stormwater retrofits we aim to clean and infiltrate stormwater before it reaches the creek effectively mimicking natural drainage processes. CFRC&D is embarking on an ambitious project to redesign and replace up to five culverts which will restore two miles of vital stream channels for each culvert. This transformative initiative will enhance stream connectivity and reclaim historic migratory fish habitats boosting biodiversity and ensuring healthier ecosystems for generations to come. In partnership with the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership SARP and Moffatt & Nichol M&N we conducted an in-depth survey of 200 culverts across Bladen and Pender Counties. Through the innovative SARP Barrier Prioritization tool we identified the top five most critical barriers to aquatic connectivity. Our expert hydraulic engineers at M&N are now ready to carry out detailed analyses of these key culverts paving the way for their replacement. With a remarkable grant of $770,000 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation received over three funding cycles we are ready to make significant strides in restoring our waterways.
