IN ADDITION, OTHER UNIVERSITY AREAS PARTICIPATED IN 1,112 HOURS OF SERVICE. THEREFORE, THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS EQUALS A TOTAL OF 2,532 HOURS. HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE YEAR INCLUDE: STUDENTS WORKED ON SERVICE PROJECTS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. TWENTY-THREE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THESE SMALL GROUP EVENTS. FRANCIS SCHOLARS AND OTHER STUDENTS WORKED WITH LOCAL CHURCHES TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR RICHFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH THE BACKPACK BUDDIES PROGRAM. PFEIFFER PROVIDED AN ON-CAMPUS BACKPACK BUDDY PACKING PROJECT FOR THE CAMPUS POPULATION TWO TIMES EACH SEMESTER. THE FRANCIS CENTER HAD 65 PARTICIPANTS IN BACKPACK BUDDIES IN THE FALL AND SPRING, PROVIDING FOOD FOR 25 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. STUDENT PARTICIPATED IN SERVICE PROJECTS WITH STANLY COUNTY CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES IN ALBEMARLE. THIS YEAR THEY SPECIFICALLY WORKED STAFFING A MOBILE FOOD PANTRY ALONSIDE A NEIGHBORING CHURCH WHERE THEY HELPED CLIENTS PICK OUT GROCERIES AND LOAD THEM IN THEIR CARS. THIRTY STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THIS MINISTRY DURING THE FALL. FRANCIS CENTER ALSO DID A CLOTHING DRIVE TO COLLECT CLOTHES FOR THE STANLY COUNTY CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES CLOTHING CLOSET THAT HELPS FUND THEIR FEEDING PROGRAM. THE FRANCIS CENTER WORKED WITH LOCAL CHURCHES TO PROVIDE A GOOD NEIGHBOR PANTRY IN PFEIFFER'S CHAPEL TO HELP FOOD-INSECURE STUDENTS AND NEIGHBORS GET WHAT THEY NEED WITHOUT JUDGMENT. THEY ALSO PROVIDED PERIOD PRODUCTS FOR FEMALE STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE TO AFFORD THEM. THE FRANCIS CENTER HOSTED TWO ONCAMPUS PROJECT LINUS EVENTS, AN OPPORTUNITY WHERE STUDENTS MAKE BLANKETS FOR HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN TWO TIMES DURING THE SEMESTER WITH 54 PARTICIPANTS. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS ALSO MADE BLANKETS FOR ESTHER HOUSE, A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER IN OUR COMMUNITY. STUDENTS COLLABORATED WITH THE SALVATION ARMY OF CABARRAS AND STANLY COUNTY TO PROVIDE ANGEL TREE GIFTS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN. STUDENTS AND STAFF PROVIDED CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR 40 CHILDREN IN THIS SERVICE PROJECT. OTHER AREAS OF CAMPUS ALSO PROVIDE SERVICE. FOR INSTANCE, ALL THE FIRST YEAR SEMINARS DO A SERVICE PROJECT IN THE FALL SEMESTER. LAST YEAR, SERVICE PROJECTS INCLUDED WORKING WITH ANGEL TREE, THE HUMANE SOCIETY, AND CAMPUS CLEANUPS. DELIGHT MINISTRIES, A WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY GROUP ALSO DID A PROJECT WITH THE LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER. |
