Our mission is to build a presence in the community where african american men advocate as a group for the betterment of our neighborhoods through the support and empowerment of our youth. We mentor youth to engage in constructive behaviors and guide them to direct their energies toward positive activities. We provide community leadership and encourage education as a first priority. “Line 4a cmbla-welcome to manhood program program description: welcome to manhood is a group mentoring program for youn men ages 11-19 years old. Workshops are generally two hours long and take place once a month during the nine-month academic year. Students enrolled in the program participate in a variey of interactive activities including group discussions, team building exercises, and q&a sessions with quest speakers. The typical workshops hosts between 7 and 25 teens and young boys. Our goal is to promote education, provide career guidance, and instruct young men on the importance of self-mastery and personal achievement. Program service accomplishments: conducted 10 youth development workshops attended by 61-cbmla youth mentees. Mentees participated in three (3) youth enrichment field trips: (1) meeting the los angeles county sheriff james mcdonald at his headquarters at the los angeles hall of justice, (2) visiting the los angeles auto show, and (3) attended los angeles clippers' basketball games. Line 4b cbmla-cares program program description: cbmla cares is a comprehensive youth development program designed to improve academic and life outcomes for middle school students nationwide where cbm chapters are located. Cbm cares program facilitators lead weekly workshops with cbm mentees at their schools during school hours. Through this program mentees develop life skills, stronger school attachment, and improved citizenship. Program service accomplishments: conducted 10 youth development workshops attended by 61-cbmla youth mentees. Mentees participated in three (3) youth enrichment field trips: (1) meeting the los angeles county sheriff james mcdonald at his headquarters at the los angeles hall of justice, (2) visiting the los angeles auto show, and (3) attended los angeles clippers' basketball games. Program impact: cares workshop facilitators conducted a number of interactive youth workshops exercised during the program year. In two such exercises the cares workshp facilitator had youth participate in a conceptual critical analysis of the pledge of allegiance to the american flag; and secondly, take part in a linguistic analysis of popular youth music. The mentees were particularly asked to review and analyze the metaphoric language and innuendos spoken by rap artists. For example, they were asked to share their ideas about the homophobic slurs mentioned in some rap songs. Additionally, students were asked to take note and closely examine some of the "off-color" language used by some youth. Students read and discussed the american pledge of allegiance. The facilitator noted that most of students participating in the conceptual analysis exercise have not seriously read of discussed nor deeply understood the pledge. The exercise allowed students an opportunity to critically think about and not just blindly recite the words. Most of the mentees came away from the exercise with a greater understanding and meaning of the american pledge of allegiance. A similar workshop session was conducted when youth were given an opportunity to think about and discuss rap music lyrics they consciously and unconsciously recite. Adolsecent youth typically recite rap music words without giving the words much thought or depth of understanding. During this exercise students were asked to breakdown the lyrics of their favorite songs and problematized the lyrics. Taking the time to breakdown the words of a song gave them a chance to see how easily they can subscribe to something they do not agree with. During the analytical session students dealt with such issues as homophobia and hatreds they may have of some groups that have not done anything to them. Students developed a sense of caring for others and that they were cared for as well. CBM CARES PROGRAM FACILITATORS LEAD WEEKLY WORKSHOPS WITH CBM MENTEES AT THEIR SCHOOLS DURING SCHOOL HOURS. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM MENTEES DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS, STRONGER SCHOOL ATTACHMENT, AND IMPROVED CITIZENSHIP. IN TWO SUCH EXERCISES THE CARES WORKSHP FACILITATOR HAD YOUTH PARTICIPATE IN A CONCEPTUAL CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE AMERICAN FLAG; AND SECONDLY, TAKE PART IN A LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF POPULAR YOUTH MUSIC. THE MENTEES WERE PARTICULARLY ASKED TO REVIEW AND ANALYZE THE METAPHORIC LANGUAGE AND INNUENDOS SPOKEN BY RAP ARTISTS. FOR EXAMPLE, THEY WERE ASKED TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS ABOUT THE HOMOPHOBIC SLURS MENTIONED IN SOME RAP SONGS. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO TAKE NOTE AND CLOSELY EXAMINE SOME OF THE "OFF-COLOR" LANGUAGE USED BY SOME YOUTH. STUDENTS READ AND DISCUSSED THE AMERICAN PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. THE FACILITATOR NOTED THAT MOST OF STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS EXERCISE HAVE NOT SERIOUSLY READ OF DISCUSSED NOR DEEPLY UNDERSTOOD THE PLEDGE. THE EXERCISE ALLOWED STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CRITICALLY THINK ABOUT AND NOT JUST BLINDLY RECITE THE WORDS. MOST OF THE MENTEES CAME AWAY FROM THE EXERCISE WITH A GREATER UNDERSTANDING AND MEANING OF THE AMERICAN PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. A SIMILAR WORKSHOP SESSION WAS CONDUCTED WHEN YOUTH WERE GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO THINK ABOUT AND DISCUSS RAP MUSIC LYRICS THEY CONSCIOUSLY AND UNCONSCIOUSLY RECITE. ADOLSECENT YOUTH TYPICALLY RECITE RAP MUSIC WORDS WITHOUT GIVING THE WORDS MUCH THOUGHT OR DEPTH OF UNDERSTANDING. DURING THIS EXERCISE STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO BREAKDOWN THE LYRICS OF THEIR FAVORITE SONGS AND PROBLEMATIZED THE LYRICS. TAKING THE TIME TO BREAKDOWN THE WORDS OF A SONG GAVE THEM A CHANCE TO SEE HOW EASILY THEY CAN SUBSCRIBE TO SOMETHING THEY DO NOT AGREE WITH. DURING THE ANALYTICAL SESSION STUDENTS DEALT WITH SUCH ISSUES AS HOMOPHOBIA AND HATREDS THEY MAY HAVE OF SOME GROUPS THAT HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING TO THEM.
