FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Computers4kids is about computers and so much more. C4k empowers under- served youth by bringing together technology and imagination through supportive mentoring, youth-driven programming, and skill building for life success.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Volunteers have three options: 1) one-to-one mentoring - working one-to-one with a youth to help them express themselves through technology while building a positive connection 2) group mentoring - working with small groups of youth to help them build skills and spark new interests for college and career success 3) refurbishing - readying our donated computer equipment for distribution to a deserving youth.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

This year, c4k offered more than 36 structured educational workshop sessions--each one focusing on digital skills and college/career readiness. 80% of our members participated in college and/or job readiness activities. 69 members met 1:1 with community mentors. Our youth spent 2,340 hours with a 1:1 mentor dedicated to helping youth learn new skills. C4k collaborates with local businesses, content experts, and workforce service providers to give youth more opportunities to engage in learning. We have recently enhanced our educational programming, based on feedback from our youth council. In our expanded workshop series, youth work with mentors to build websites, make robots, and program in scratch and python. All workshops incorporate professional-level technologies with real-world skill development. We are taking more field trips to businesses and colleges to show youth how the skills they are learning at c4k apply to college and career opportunities. These trips are working: during a visit to willowtree apps, c4k member commented, "i can see myself here." in 2017, 70% of c4k youth participated in a youth impact survey. The survey is standardized, based on research, and is independently administered by inverness research group. Findings include: 96% said c4k involvement increased commitment to high school and to education after high school some or a lot. 88% said their participation in clubhouse programming contributed some or a lot in them making better choices in their life. 82% said c4k increased their interest in studying some aspect of stem in the future some or a lot. 100% agreed or strongly agreed that when thinking about the adults at the c4k, they feel accepted, they feel the adults can be trusted, and they value the adults' knowledge and experience. The c4k model is proven to be effective: 98% of our members graduate from high school on time, which is 20% higher than the citywide average for students from low-income households. 92% of c4k members then go on to college, compared with the national average of just 50% of low-income students attending college (local data from charlottesville and albemarle county is not available).

IRS990/Desc0160 YOUTH MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN C4K'S MENTOR PROGRAMMING THIS YEAR. WE FOLLOW CHANGES IN YOUTH PARTICIPATION OVER TIME AND QUANTIFY INCREASES IN YOUTH WHO ATTEND C4K MORE OFTEN AND STAY LONGER. WITH HELP FROM LOCAL DATA EXPERTS, HACKCVILLE, WE RECENTLY ANALYZED YOUTH ATTENDANCE DATA FROM 2016- PRESENT AND FOUND THAT, SINCE 2017, THE MAJORITY OF YOUTH ATTENDED FREQUENTLY (ATTENDING C4K 5+ TIMES/MONTH) AND MODERATELY FREQUENTLY (ATTENDING C4K TWO+ TIMES/MONTH). THIS IS A CHANGE FROM 2016, WHEN THE MAJORITY OF MEMBERS ATTENDED INFREQUENTLY. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O THIS YEAR, C4K OFFERED MORE THAN 36 STRUCTURED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP SESSIONS--EACH ONE FOCUSING ON DIGITAL SKILLS AND COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0COMPUTERS4KIDS IS ABOUT COMPUTERS AND SO MUCH MORE. C4K EMPOWERS UNDER- SERVED YOUTH BY BRINGING TOGETHER TECHNOLOGY AND IMAGINATION THROUGH SUPPORTIVE MENTORING, YOUTH-DRIVEN PROGRAMMING, AND SKILL BUILDING FOR LIFE SUCCESS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1VOLUNTEERS HAVE THREE OPTIONS: 1) ONE-TO-ONE MENTORING - WORKING ONE-TO-ONE WITH A YOUTH TO HELP THEM EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY WHILE BUILDING A POSITIVE CONNECTION 2) GROUP MENTORING - WORKING WITH SMALL GROUPS OF YOUTH TO HELP THEM BUILD SKILLS AND SPARK NEW INTERESTS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER SUCCESS 3) REFURBISHING - READYING OUR DONATED COMPUTER EQUIPMENT FOR DISTRIBUTION TO A DESERVING YOUTH.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2THIS YEAR, C4K OFFERED MORE THAN 36 STRUCTURED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP SESSIONS--EACH ONE FOCUSING ON DIGITAL SKILLS AND COLLEGE/CAREER READINESS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3PRIOR TO FILING, THE 990 IS REVIEWED BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE FINANCE COMMITTEE. THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD IS ALSO GIVEN A COPY TO REVIEW.
