| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| Two Cents for Compost Program: A voluntary donation program in which compost producers agree to pay into a fund that will be managed by CCREF. On an annual basis, producers will pay $.02 per ton of compost that they sell, or a penny per cubic yard. This money will be placed in a dedicated fund that will be distributed by the CRREF. After establishing grant-making criteria, the CCREF will use an open RFP process to solicit proposals for research and education projects.Young Investigator Scholarship: The focus of the program is to help support young professionals' research in the fields of compost use and application, and the soil water connection. The goal is to bring attention to emerging young professionals in the field of compost research and to spark interest in the future of the composting industry.Curb to Compost Toolkit: This Toolkit provides an overview of organics recovery, with basic data and examples of outreach materials to aid in the development of a residential food scrap collection program that will be administrated by a city and/or municipal waste management district already collecting yard debris. While elements of this package can be used in other sectors, such as commercial settings, schools, public venues and special events, the scope for this package is designed for residential food scraps. Soil and Water Connection: CCREF has consolidated scientific research to update a valuable research publication in response to the growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of compost to mitigate storm by managing rain where it falls, thereby preventing the transport of sediment and harmful pollutants to our nation's waterways. The guide, the 1997 edition of the Soil and Water Connection: a Watershed Manager's Guide to Organics, provides water, soil, and forestry managers with scientific best practices for compost use. Compost Plastic Tool Kit: Leverages national resources to help municipalities manage compostable plastics. This educational and outreach took kit would include material such as how-to guides for creating purchasing policies, educational material for consumers & purchasers, and product compostability research findings. Compostable plastics resource materials for municipalities will help create solutions to key challenges posed by compostable plastic management in solid waste programs. | $3,500 | $14,399 |

“The goal of the Certification grant was for the development of a self- sustaining professional certification program for organics recycling professionals. This program would assure technical knowledge and skillsets necessary for the successful management of compost facilities. It will give regulators, facility owners and the general public greater confidence in compost production, while providing increased professionalism to the composing workforce. Now that this has been completed all aspects of the "Certification Program" will be managed by the US Composting Council effective October 2016.”
