Mission

Rice's hotel/hughlett's tavern foundation, inc. Exists to restore & preserve the courthouse hotel/tavern, to research & interpret its history to area citizens and visitors. The story of the tavern and its relationship to the development of northumberland county, virginia, reflects what happened in countless courthouse villages throughout virginia. To restore historic hotel/tavern, considered the only surviving "courthouse tavern" in the commonwealth of virginia. Restoration of the main structure is completed. Interpretive and educational programs are offered to school groups. Other tours can be arranged by request. A restaurant which reflects the period of the original tavern has opened. A working blacksmith shop was dedicated during 2005. This structure expands the interpretive role and the importance of the tavern in the courthouse community. This building is becoming a major part of the educational program. The transportation center construction was completed in 2006. This building

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Rice's hotel/hughlett's tavern foundation, inc. Exists to restore & preserve the courthouse hotel/tavern, to research & interpret its history to area citizens and visitors. The story of the tavern and its relationship to the development of northumberland county, virginia, reflects what happened in countless courthouse villages throughout virginia. To restore historic hotel/tavern, considered the only surviving "courthouse tavern" in the commonwealth of virginia. Restoration of the main structure is completed. Interpretive and educational programs are offered to school groups. Other tours can be arranged by request. A restaurant which reflects the period of the original tavern has opened. A working blacksmith shop was dedicated during 2005. This structure expands the interpretive role and the importance of the tavern in the courthouse community. This building is becoming a major part of the educational program. The transportation center construction was completed in 2006. This building is used for volunteer meetings and activities as well as being available for rent. The third new structure, a carriage house, was completed in 2007. This building is large enough to display a half dozen carriages, two of which are already refurbished. The three structures form an arc, each stucture has a covered veranda. The "green" in the center of the structures provides an area for events and assembly. These events include a monthly farmer's market.

Volunteers plan and staff all fund raising and program service activities including: 1. Museum store-ordering, display, sales of inventory 2. Derby day - mailing invitations, decorating, organizing food, and entertainment for annual fundraiser. 3. Quilt guild volunteers, design and construct quilts over a two year period for sale at the bi-annual quilt gala. The guild members offer classes and demonstrations for community members of all ages. 4. Blacksmith guild voluteers, design and construct metal products for sale. Volunteers perform work in an authentic blacksmith shop using period tools and materials for each farmer's market. 5. Volunteers at the farmer's market include costumed hostesses, parking assistants, bake sale workers and demonstrations by members of the quilt guild, blacksmith guild, and spinners and weavers. 6. Tavern rangers meet weekly to conduct repair and maintainence activities at the restored tavern and other buildings.

Work began on the restoration of a 1929 model a. Other permanent displays are being developed. 2. A functional blacksmith's shop is complete. This construction was done by an all volunteer group known as the tavern rangers. The blacksmith's shop produces items for sale. Member of the blacksmith's guild are trained in the blacksmith trade/skills. The blacksmith shop is open during the farmer's market and provides demonstrations of a working forge. 3. The educational program focuses on 3rd and 4th grade students who study virginia history as a part of our state curriculum. In 2008, the program expanded to include 5th grade students and the northern neck home schoolers association. Expenses included printing costs, postage, and office supplies, and telephone. Over 2400 students were given a taste of local history. Hands on activities included, quilt making, brick making, colonial games, net mending, quill writing, african american storytelling, and archeology. 4. Now that the tavern and hotel are restored, the foundation assumes the responsibility to maintain this building. Expenses included are for insurance, maintenance, utilities, telephone, etc. Protection 4. The transportation museum was completed in 2005. The carriage house was completed in late 2007. THE STORY OF THE TAVERN AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, REFLECTS WHAT HAPPENED IN COUNTLESS COURTHOUSE VILLAGES THROUGHOUT VIRGINIA. TO RESTORE HISTORIC HOTEL/TAVERN, CONSIDERED THE ONLY SURVIVING "COURTHOUSE TAVERN" IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. RESTORATION OF THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS COMPLETED. INTERPRETIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED TO SCHOOL GROUPS. OTHER TOURS CAN BE ARRANGED BY REQUEST. A RESTAURANT WHICH REFLECTS THE PERIOD OF THE ORIGINAL TAVERN HAS OPENED. A WORKING BLACKSMITH SHOP WAS DEDICATED DURING 2005. THIS STRUCTURE EXPANDS THE INTERPRETIVE ROLE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TAVERN IN THE COURTHOUSE COMMUNITY. THE MUSEUM DISPLAYS RESTORED ANTIQUE CARRIAGES, BUGGIES, CARTS. WORK BEGAN ON THE RESTORATION OF A 1929 MODEL A. OTHER PERMANENT DISPLAYS ARE BEING DEVELOPED. 2. A FUNCTIONAL BLACKSMITH'S SHOP IS COMPLETE. THIS CONSTRUCTION WAS DONE BY AN ALL VOLUNTEER GROUP KNOWN AS THE TAVERN RANGERS. THE BLACKSMITH'S SHOP PRODUCES ITEMS FOR SALE. MEMBER OF THE BLACKSMITH'S GUILD ARE TRAINED IN THE BLACKSMITH TRADE/SKILLS. THE BLACKSMITH SHOP IS OPEN DURING THE FARMER'S MARKET AND PROVIDES DEMONSTRATIONS OF A WORKING FORGE. 3. THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOCUSES ON 3RD AND 4TH GRADE STUDENTS WHO STUDY VIRGINIA HISTORY AS A PART OF OUR STATE CURRICULUM. IN 2008, THE PROGRAM EXPANDED TO INCLUDE 5TH GRADE STUDENTS AND THE NORTHERN NECK HOME SCHOOLERS ASSOCIATION. EXPENSES INCLUDED PRINTING COSTS, POSTAGE, AND OFFICE SUPPLIES, AND TELEPHONE. OVER 2400 STUDENTS WERE GIVEN A TASTE OF LOCAL HISTORY. HANDS ON ACTIVITIES INCLUDED, QUILT MAKING, BRICK MAKING, COLONIAL GAMES, NET MENDING, QUILL WRITING, AFRICAN AMERICAN STORYTELLING, AND ARCHEOLOGY. 4. NOW THAT THE TAVERN AND HOTEL ARE RESTORED, THE FOUNDATION ASSUMES THE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN THIS BUILDING. EXPENSES INCLUDED ARE FOR INSURANCE, MAINTENANCE, UTILITIES, TELEPHONE, ETC. PROTECTION 4. THE TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM WAS COMPLETED IN 2005. THE CARRIAGE HOUSE WAS COMPLETED IN LATE 2007. THE MUSEUM HOUSES MANY EXAMPLES OF ANTIQUE CARRIAGES AND VEHICLES. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE AND DURING THE FARMER'S MARKET. THE TRANSPORATION BUILDING IS USED FOR DEMONSTRATIONS OF QUILTING, SPINNING, WEAVING, MAKING THREAD. THESE DEMONSTRATIONS ARE PROVIDE DURING THE FARMER'S MARKET AND FOR THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS CONDUCTED BY THE TAVERN.

EXISTS TO RESTORE & PRESERVE THE COURTHOUSE HOTEL/TAVERN, TO RESEARCH & INTERPRET ITS HISTORY TO AREA CITIZENS AND VISITORS. THE STORY OF THE TAVERN AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, REFLECTS WHAT HAPPENED IN COUNTLESS COURTHOUSE VILLAGES THROUGHOUT VIRGINIA. TO RESTORE HISTORIC HOTEL/TAVERN, CONSIDERED THE ONLY SURVIVING "COURTHOUSE TAVERN" IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. RESTORATION OF THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS COMPLETED. INTERPRETIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED TO SCHOOL GROUPS. OTHER TOURS CAN BE ARRANGED BY REQUEST. A RESTAURANT WHICH REFLECTS THE PERIOD OF THE ORIGINAL TAVERN HAS OPENED. A WORKING BLACKSMITH SHOP WAS DEDICATED DURING 2005. THIS STRUCTURE EXPANDS THE INTERPRETIVE ROLE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TAVERN IN THE COURTHOUSE COMMUNITY. THIS BUILDING IS BECOMING A MAJOR PART OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. THE TRANSPORTATION CENTER CONSTRUCTION WAS COMPLETED IN 2006. THIS BUILDING IS USED FOR VOLUNTEER MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS BEING AVAILABLE FOR RENT. THE THIRD NEW STRUCTURE, A CARRIAGE HOUSE, WAS COMPLETED IN 2007. THIS BUILDING IS LARGE ENOUGH TO DISPLAY A HALF DOZEN CARRIAGES, TWO OF WHICH ARE ALREADY REFURBISHED. THE THREE STRUCTURES FORM AN ARC, EACH STUCTURE HAS A COVERED VERANDA. THE "GREEN" IN THE CENTER OF THE STRUCTURES PROVIDES AN AREA FOR EVENTS AND ASSEMBLY. THESE EVENTS INCLUDE A MONTHLY FARMER'S MARKET.

VOLUNTEERS PERFORM WORK IN AN AUTHENTIC BLACKSMITH SHOP USING PERIOD TOOLS AND MATERIALS FOR EACH FARMER'S MARKET. 5. VOLUNTEERS AT THE FARMER'S MARKET INCLUDE COSTUMED HOSTESSES, PARKING ASSISTANTS, BAKE SALE WORKERS AND DEMONSTRATIONS BY MEMBERS OF THE QUILT GUILD, BLACKSMITH GUILD, AND SPINNERS AND WEAVERS. 6. TAVERN RANGERS MEET WEEKLY TO CONDUCT REPAIR AND MAINTAINENCE ACTIVITIES AT THE RESTORED TAVERN AND OTHER BUILDINGS.
