FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The public lands alliance (pla) mission is to connect, strengthen and represent the nonprofit partners of america's public lands. Pla is a vibrant network of close to 160 nonprofit organizations that partner with public lands in every u.s. State and territory. The alliance has strengthened the public lands community for more than forty-five years through its national programs and advocacy. Pla works for the day when america's public lands are understood and appreciated, preserved and conserved and enjoyed by all. The most direct way to realize this vision is to ensure that public lands have strong nonprofit partners with the capacity to galvanize private support, catalyze change and take strategic risks.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

There were a total of 58 volunteers which included a total of 18 volunteer board members.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Strengthen pla offers a variety of training, consultation, and networking experiences that enhance the capabilities of nonprofit public land organizations and land management agencies to solve problems, create impact, and achieve shared missions that benefit public lands and their users. Pla delivers its programs online and at face-to-face meetings across the country. Its annual convention and trade show offers critical education, shared learning, and best practices to more than 600 professionals and volunteers from the public lands community and industry partners. Other professional development programs include the partnership awards program, webinars, and an online education resource library. Pla has a special relationship with the u.s. Fish and wildlife service to increase public awareness of and private support for the national wildlife refuge system through collaborative partnerships and capacity building with refuge friends organizations.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Page 3, Part X

Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america provide consistent guidance for the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in pla's financial statements and prescribe a threshold of "more likely than not" for recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Pla performed an evaluation of uncertain tax positions for the year ended september 30, 2024, and determined that there were no matters that would require recognition in the financial statements or that may have any effect on its tax-exempt status. As of september 30, 2024, the statute of limitations for tax years 2020 through 2022 remains open with the u.s. Federal jurisdiction or the various states and local jurisdictions in which pla files tax returns. It is pla's policy to recognize interest and/or penalties related to uncertain tax positions, if any, in income tax expense. As of september 30, 2024, pla had no accruals for interest and/or penalties.
