Mission

The purpose of Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO, Inc.) is to assist people in need in our community, those who suffer the effects of long-term poverty as well as those who are experiencing an emergency financial need.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

Per ECHO bylaws, the Executive Committee functions as the operating arm of the Corporation and makes policy decisions, commits resources and conducts the business affairs of the Corporation, subject to the direction of the Board of Directors. The Executive Committee consists of the elected officers of the Corporation, the Executive Director of the Corporation, two Board Members appointed by the Board, the Director of Communications and Outreach, and the Director of Support Operations. Committee Chairs/Co-chairs act as advisors to the Executive Committee.

This FY 2024 Form 990 was reviewed before filing by the President of ECHO, the Vice President for Finance, the Treasurer and the Executive Director. It will be posted on the Organization's website after filing for review by other officers and members of the Board of Directors.

ECHO is a not-for-profit organization exempt from income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a Section 501(a) organization within the meaning of Section 509(a). The Internal Revenue Service has determined that ECHO is a publicly supported organization. ECHO has evaluated its tax position and determined it is more likely than not to be sustained on examination. ECHO's returns are subject to examination by governmental authorities, generally for three years after the date of filing.

IRS990/Desc0Continuing to absorb the lessons learned from the COVID pandemic, ECHO adjusted operations and finances in FY 2024 to address a decline in food donations, while meeting increased needs for financial assistance for rent and utilities. ECHO assisted 1,414 unduplicated households, 5,413 individuals in FY 2024. During the year 501 households received assistance to pay bills for housing, utilities, prescriptions, and other essential needs. Clients received 259,765 pounds of food plus $51,040 in coupons for fresh produce, meat and milk; 3,887 clothing bags; and household items valued at $134,152. In addition, 1,242 children received backpacks filled with school supplies. Included in the household items were 38 refurbished computers and 1,630 enrichment bags containing books and toys for children of client families. 452 families received holiday food, and 548 children from 217 families received holiday gifts. In-kind donations for clothing and housewares kept pace with need. As in-kind food donations continued to decline, ECHO expanded its partnerships with vendors for purchasing food to meet neighbors' needs. This adaptation of the ECHO all-volunteer organization to continue to help neighbors in need is just one example of the maturity of its processes, and the selfless service of those who implement these processes.
