Mission

To bring people closer to their own stories and the american story by connecting them to history, culture, and domestic life in the nation's capital, as embodied in the tudor place estate and the collections of the custis-peter family from the 18th through the 20th centuries.

To share the stories of two centuries of american history and culture, connecting individuals to their own stories as the american story unfolds.

Financial Statement Notes

PART II, LINE 5:

Tudor place foundation, inc. Has a buildings and grounds conservation policy which outlines the periodic monitoring, inspection, violations and enforcement of the conservation easements it holds.

PART II, LINE 9:

Tudor place was granted status as a national historic landmark in 1960. The foundation granted an easement to the department of the interior in 1966 to protect the land for its historic value. In 2003, the foundation granted an easement to the department of the interior to protect both the exterior and interior of the building for its historic value. In accordance with the american association of museums code of ethics, the foundation's buildings, landscape, and gardens are not reported in the accompanying consolidated financial statements insofar as it is not practicable to value all such assets or to assess their historic cost.

PART III, LINE 1A:

In accordance with the american association of museum's code of ethics, the foundation's collections (historic objects, archival items, books, buildings, landscape, and gardens) are not reported in the accompanying consolidated financial statements insofar as it is not practicable to value all such assets or to assess their historic cost. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The foundation has no interest in disposing of all of the items comprising its collection, and recording their estimated cost would not be of significant relevance. Purchases of collection items funded by restricted contributions are released from restrictions and recorded as unrestricted conservation expenses when made. Donated collection items are not recognized in the consolidated financial statements as revenue or assets. From time to time, the board authorizes certain items from the collections to be deaccessioned. The effects of deaccessionning items from the collections do not appear in the consolidated financial statements unless they are sold.

PART III, LINE 4:

Tudor place was granted status as a national historic landmark in 1960. In addition, the foundation was granted an easement by the department of the interior in 1966 to protect the land for its historic value. The foundation's collections include historic objects, archival items, books, buildings, landscape, and gardens. The tudor place museum collection includes over 15,000 objects including silver, furniture, paintings, architectural and archaeological artifacts, jewelry, and household items spanning the period 1750-1983. An extensive archival collection includes the papers and correspondence of six generations of the peter family, presidential documents, photographs, deeds, and a 5,000-volume book collection. The archive is particularly complete in recording the history of the property, the house and its contents, and the garden from the 1860s to 1984. Each of the items are cataloged, preserved, and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. A board-approved collections management policy and industry best-practices guide the care, exhibition, and use of the museum collection and archive.

PART V, LINE 4:

Accumulated earnings from the foundation's endowment funds provide operating support to the tudor place buildings and grounds.

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation follows the accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the consolidated financial statements. Management evaluated the foundation's tax positions and concluded that the foundation has taken no uncertain tax positions that require adjustment to the consolidated financial statements to comply with the provisions of this guidance. For the years ended december 31, 2016 and 2015, no unrecognized tax provision or benefit exists.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Cost of goods sold not included in revenue on financial statements direct fundraising expenses not included in revenue on financial statements

PART XII, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Cost of goods sold included in part viii, line 10b direct fundraising expenses included in part viii, line 8b

IRS990/MissionDesc0TO SHARE THE STORIES OF TWO CENTURIES OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE, CONNECTING INDIVIDUALS TO THEIR OWN STORIES AS THE AMERICAN STORY UNFOLDS THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE, COLLECTION AND ARCHIVE, BY BRINGING TO LIFE THE EVENTS THAT SHAPED AMERICA AND THE FEDERAL CITY, AND ENGAGING THE PUBLIC IN DISCOVERING AMERICAN HISTORY. THE PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF THE FAMILY AND THOSE WHO SERVED THEM OPENS THE DOOR TO AMERICA'S PAST AND THE MAJOR ISSUES THAT SHAPED ITS PATH.
