THROUGH OUR POWER LUNCH PROGRAM, EWLA MATCHES ADULT VOLUNTEERS FROM CORPORATIONS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WHO READ ONE-ON-ONE WITH "AT RISK" STUDENTS AT A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. ONCE A WEEK, EACH READING PAIR SHARES CONVERSATION AND A GOOD BOOK WHILE THE STUDENT EATS LUNCH. THE GOAL OF POWER LUNCH IS TO REACH TITLE I SCHOOL STUDENTS WHILE THEY ARE YOUNG, TO STIMULATE THEIR INTEREST IN READING, AND TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO BELIEVE THAT THEY TOO CAN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL, AND ULTIMATELY IN LIFE. STUDIES SHOW THAT SIMPLY READING TO A CHILD FOR AN HOUR A WEEK DRASTICALLY INCREASES HIS OR HER CONFIDENCE AND LOVE OF READING. THROUGH OUR READERS ARE LEADERS PROGRAM, EWLA MATCHES OLDER STUDENTS WITH "AT RISK" STUDENTS IN THEIR SAME NEIGHBORHOOD TO SHARE A BOOK EACH WEEK DURING LUNCH. BOTH THE OLDER AND YOUNGER STUDENT WIN BY RECEIVING THE ATTENTION THEY NEED TO DEVELOP LITERACY SKILLS, BUILD CONFIDENCE, AND CULTIVATE A LIFELONG LOVE OF READING. THROUGH OUR BOOK BUDDIES AND BOOK DRIVE PROGRAMS, WE SHARE BOOKS WITH OUR STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES AND OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS.
