Mission and Program Overview

Mission

MISSION -- supporting advocates for peace: The Advocacy Project (AP) supports community-based initiatives for social justice and peace in the Global South through research, fundraising and technical support. We do this by developing partnerships with community advocates and helping them to launch projects for social change.

Mission -- supporting advocates for peace: The Advocacy Project (AP) works through US-based graduate students to help marginalized communities in the Global South tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. Goals -- support programs for social change and empower US graduate students, academically and professionally: AP has two main programs: (a) First, to launch and support projects by community-based organizations (CBOs) in the Global South; (b) Second, to recruit US graduate students as "Fellows for Peace" to provide technical support and research for the CBOs each year. In the process, Fellows derive academic benefits, acquire skills and build their professional qualifications.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

During 2015, the Advocacy Project helped to incubate an exciting new initiative to provide employment opportunities for refugees stuck in the Middle East that quickly gained traction and interest from the World Bank, UN and US Government. Talent Beyond Boundaries' (TBB) goal is to find jobs for refugees in the Middle East, by putting them in touch with potential employers in the global private sector.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The Organization is exempt from federal taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). However, income from certain activities not directly related to AP's tax-exempt purposes is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. There was no net unrealized business taxable income during the year. The Advocacy Project has adopted the Financial Accounting Standards Board FASB ASC 740-10 Income Taxes, which requires an assessment of uncertainty in income taxes and certain financial statement disclosures relating to unrecognized tax benefits. For the year ended December 31, 2015, AP has documented its consideration of FASB ASC 740-10 and determined that no material uncertain tax positions qualify for either recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. The tax return for year 2015 remains subject to IRS exam.

IRS990/Desc0PROGRAM 1. Support community-led projects for social change and peace in the Global South In 2015, AP helped the following partner organizations in Mali, Uganda, Vietnam and Nepal to develop projects. These benefited over 4,500 individuals and family members: 1a) In Mali, Sini Sanuman managed two centers where 240 survivors of war rape recovered their confidence through training. 1b) In Vietnam, the Association for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (AEPD) developed microprojects for families that have been severely affected by dioxin poisoning (Agent Orange). 1c) In Uganda, we raised over $5,000 for the Gulu Disabled Persons Union. This enabled GDPU to construct an accessible toilet and washing facilities for students with disability at Tochi School, northern Uganda. 1d) In Nepal, we raised roughly $25,000 for Care Women Nepal (CWN). This enabled CWN to organize a health camp in Dhankuta district, screen 1,005 villagers for uterine prolapse and send 12 women with advanced prolapse for surgery. 1e) In Nepal, we raised over $5,000. This enabled the organization CONCERN to rescue 25 children from dangerous work in the brick kilns, and place the children in school. 1f) In Nepal, we raised $3,500 for the network of families of the disappeared (NEFAD), and thus enabled several widows to learn embroidery and produce squares for an advocacy quilt - the first income-generation program for families of the disappeared in Nepal. AP will continue to support these and other projects in 2016.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PROGRAM 2. Deploy graduate students (Fellows for Peace) to produce research and provide technical support for partner organizations in the Global South AP provides technical assistance to partners and their projects by deploying graduate students to serve as Fellows for Peace for periods of up to one year. This provides Fellows with a unique opportunity to produce academic material, learn skills, and enhance their professional prospects. Between 2003 and 2015 AP recruited 274 graduate students from 61 universities In 2015, AP deployed ten Fellows from seven universities (Brandeis, Tufts, George Washington, The University of Peace, Ohio, The City University of London, and Columbia) to work in seven countries. All were able to draw on academic and professional experience. Two had worked in the Peace Corps and the rest were well versed in IT, social media, language skills, nonprofit management, and fundraising. As in previous years, AP sought to capitalize on these attributes and also provide Fellows with rich academic content and tools for their second year at school. Such a program requires AP to works closely with universities and in 2015 we deepened our ties with the Fletcher School at Tufts, the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, Columbia University (SIPA), George Washington University, and the University of Maryland. Our staff gave multiple presentations at these and other universities. We then provided a week of professional training for selected Fellows in Washington, and continued to support Fellows in the field from Washington and through on site-visits. Refilwe Moahi, from Brandeis, remained in Mali through to the end of the year. As in past years, there was a strong research component to this program. In addition to their more practical duties, Fellows were required to analyze the challenges facing their hosts, develop long-term and strategic plans, and prepare a presentation at their universities on their return. The Fellows also completed two evaluations, detailing their deliverables and the impact of the fellowship on their academic development and character.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PROGRAM 3. Provide fiscal and administrative support for Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB). During 2015, AP helped to incubate an exciting new initiative to provide employment opportunities for refugees stuck in the Middle East. This project quickly gained traction and interest from the World Bank, UN and US Government. It promises to open up significant possibilities for research on the global refugee crisis. The initiative, called Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB), was launched in early 2015. TBB began with a thorough needs assessment in the Middle East and developed partnerships with UN agencies and NGOs. In the summer, TBB asked AP to provide fiscal and administrative support in the form of accounting, payroll, management of funds, and audits. This freed TBB staff members to deepen their knowledge of the complex refugee crisis. TBB submitted an ambitious research proposal to the World Bank and was exploring a proposal to the US Department of State in late 2015, to create a catalog of refugee talent in the region. This exciting partnership will clearly deepen AP's own work with refugee advocates and research capabilities.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0PROGRAM 4. Advocacy Quilting Since 2007, AP has helped marginalized communities to tell their story through embroidered panels that are then assembled into quilts by expert quilters in the US. AP now curates over 40 quilts on behalf of partners. These are loaned out to galleries and universities for exhibition, and provide a further outlet for explaining the challenges of human rights and conflict, from the perspective of those directly affected. They have been shown at the universities of Kean (New Jersey), Georgetown, American, New York, Columbia and Tufts. This program is another illustration of AP's ability to create innovative partnerships and find new ways to explain a complex problem. It also helps our Peace Fellows to build new skills and acquire knowledge. In 2015, two Fellows, in Mali and Palestine, oversaw the making of embroidered squares, while past Fellows provide guidance to quilters assembling quilts from Peru and Mali. In 2015, AP exhibited quilts at three leading galleries in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maryland. Several Fellows involved in the making of these quilts were on hand to provide expert analysis into the issues portrayed (including war rape and disappearances). New quilting projects are in the pipeline for 2016, in Mali, Nepal and Jordan.
