Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To preserve and promote the core values of america's justice system guaranteed by the constitution - among them due process, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, fair sentencing and assistance of effective counsel - by educating the public and the legal profession to the role of these rights and values in a free society. The foundation supports the work of the national association of criminal defense lawyers toward these ends.

Major Activities

Activity 2
This grant was used primarily for educational purposes to promote more effective, more rational and more humane practices in three core areas of concern for the criminal justice system: juvenile justice, immigrant rights and sentencing. The grant specifically sought to build upon two landmark decisions by the supreme court, padilla v. Kentucky and graham v. Florida. Funded projects including major symposiums that brought together practitioners, judges, law faculty and ngo leaders to brainstorm how these decisions could be used to promote greater justice for juveniles and immigrants. Additionally, grant proceeds underwrote the cost of resource development and training programs on more effective advocacy strategies on behalf of immigrants and juveniles. The training programs were provided without charge to several thousand practicing defense counsel.
Activity 3
The proceeds of this general support grant supports the work of the national association of criminal defense lawyers to train and educate criminal defense lawyers throughout the country.

IRS990ScheduleI/Form990ScheduleIPartIV/Explanation0SCHEDULE I, PART I, LINE 2: REQUESTS FOR FUNDING FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE BEGIN WITH A LETTER OF INTEREST OF NO MORE THAN TWO PAGES DESCRIBING THE ORGANIZATION SEEKING FUNDING AND THE PROJECT FOR WHICH THE FUNDING WOULD BE USED. LETTERS OF INTEREST ARE ACCEPTED ON AN ONGOING BASIS; THERE ARE NO DEADLINES. THE LETTER OF INTEREST IS REVIEWED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AFTER WHICH THE ORGANIZATION MAY BE INVITED TO SUBMIT A FULL GRANT PROPOSAL. THE TRUSTEES OF THE FOUNDATION FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE WILL MEET AND REVIEW PROPOSALS, AND DECIDE WHETHER TO AWARD GRANTS, FROM 2-4 TIMES EACH CALENDAR YEAR. PROPOSALS, ONCE RECEIVED, WILL GENERALLY BE REVIEWED WITHIN THREE MONTHS AFTER THEIR RECEIPT UNLESS THERE IS AN EMERGENCY REQUIRING MORE TIMELY ACTION. GRANT RECIPIENTS MUST COMPLY WITH TWO REQUESTS IN ACCEPTING THE FUNDS. FIRST, THEY NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS SUPPORT IN ANY REPORT THAT RESULTS FROM THE SURVEY. SECOND, UPON COMPLETION OF THE WORK FOR WHICH THE GRANT WAS AWARDED, THE ORGANIZATION MUST PROVIDE A BRIEF STATEMENT OF HOW THE FCJ FUNDS CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROJECT. THIS FEEDBACK IS INVALUABLE IN HELPING THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DETERMINE WHETHER TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT OR FUND SIMILAR PROJECTS. FOR ANY GRANTS DISTRIBUTED TO THE NACDL (THE RELATED ASSOCIATION), THE ASSOCIATION REPORTS THE USE OF GRANT FUNDS DIRECTLY TO THE TRUSTEES.
