Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

Progressive Technology Project focuses primarily on building the capacity of groups organizing in low-income, immigrant, and/or communities of color across the United States. We work specifically with organizations striving to achieve social, economic and environmental justice. PTP's mission is to help these organizations achieve their goals more effectively and efficiently. We do that by helping groups strengthen their capacity - infrastructure, skills, understanding and practice - to integrate proven technologies into the daily life of their organizations.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under that guidance, the Organization may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Organization and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income (UBIT). The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities for the years ended December 31, 2015 and 2014.

Part XI, Line 2D - Other Adjustments:

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Progressive Technology Project (PTP) satisfies all of the following requirements to qualify as a public charity:#1Because PTP's percentage of public support is less than 33 1/3%, it is not publicly supported under the 33 1/3 test. However, PTP qualifies for public charity status under the facts and circumstances test because the public support normally received is 10% or more of its total support received. #2Because Progressive Technology Project's percentage of public support is less than 33 1/3%, it is not publicly supported under the 33 1/3 test. However, PTP should qualify for public charity status under the facts and circumstances test because its public support is 10% or more of its total support. In addition, PTP is in the second year of a three year fundraising plan aimed at diversifying its donor base. The current field of foundation funding is undergoing major change. This has been a challenge for many 501(c)3 charity organizations. PTP is pleased to have dedicated funders who have helped see us through this challenging time, however, it is our utmost goal to again diversify our funding sources to maintain proper charity status. Over the past 12 months, we have submitted over 15 Letters of Interest for new foundation funds, forged relationships with new funders through visits and calls, diversified our base of program service fee revenue which amounted to $266,146 in 2015 (approximately $31K more than in 2014) and was received by 96 organizations (15 more than in 2014). We have diversified our revenue stream by holding fundraising events, forging relationships with new foundations, and by broadening our funding base beyond foundations to individuals, major givers, and additional program service fees and will continue this work throughout 2016 and beyond. Due to the recent and growing data and internet security concerns for the social justice sector, PTP has seen an increased interest in our programs - specifically our program service fee generating program Powerbase. We expect this program to continue to grow and to generate increased revenue over the next 3-5 years. New foundations are also taking notice of PTP's groundbreaking work in progressive technology. PTP's Executive Director has had two potential funders cold call PTP and request meetings and we expect to continue educating funders on the imperative role that progressive technology and security will play for social justice groups during this election year and in the years to come. These conversations are expected to lead to new funder relationships resulting in new and diversified revenue. PTP continues to seek out new and diversified funding and all pertinent facts and circumstances indicate that Progressive Technology Project is publicly supported.#3Progressive Technology Project received its 501(c)3 public charity status in 1998 and has operated as such since that time. PTP's programs and services are 100% targeted to the public in the form of trainings and programs dedicated to strengthening the infrastructure of social justice and community organizing groups across the nation. Currently, PTP's programs - REVERB Technology & Communications Program, Grassroots Fundraising Training Program, Powerbase Database Program, People of Color Technology Training Program, Voter Project and Partnership Program- serve over 100 public charity organizations across the United States each year. Our programs have served to strengthen and bolster the success of these 100-plus 501(c)3 public charity groups, and their increased success means that an exponentially increasing number of their constituents are receiving invaluable services to enrich and improve their lives. PTP's programs are organized in a manner which attracts funding, mainly because through funding PTP, a donor is able to exponentially increase their impact due to the fact that PTP serves other 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, thus allowing a funder to indirectly improve the lives of a wide variety of constit

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements.
