Mission and Program Overview

Mission

In pursuit of a just, equitable and inclusive society, we create opportunities for latino and other historically underserved youth in high-poverty areas of montgomery co, md who are most at risk for poor social-emotional, academic and work outcomes to thrive.

Identitys mission is to provide opportunities for latino youth to believe in themselves and realize their full potential. We aim to facilitate the successful transition of latino youth into adulthood by providing skills, guidance, positive role models, and a strong sense of community. We accomplish this by reaching out to the youth and their families, one at a time, and working with our partners to overcome obstacles to their success.

IRS990/Desc0IDENTITY, INC. PROVIDES AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS OF MULTIPLE INTERACTIVE SESSIONS THAT ADDRESS LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY BUILDING, SELF-IDENTITY, COMMUNICATION SKILLS BUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, HIV/AIDS, SEXUALITY AND RELATIONSHIPS, AND GOAL SETTING. A WEEKEND OR OVERNIGHT RETREAT PROVIDES MORE INTENSIVE COVERAGE OF SELECTED TOPICS. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ARE TRAINED AS PEER EDUCATORS AND CONDUCT INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP OUTREACH ACTIVITIES WITH OTHER YOUTH IN THEIR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES. THE PROGRAM IS OFFERED DURING BOTH THE FALL AND SPRING SESSIONS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. SUMMER PROGRAMS AND GANG INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE ALSO OFFERED. IN ADDITION, PARENT EDUCATION AND SUPPORT FOR PARENTS OF THE YOUTH ENROLLED IN THE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM. MULTIPLE SESSIONS FOCUS ON PARENTING SKILLS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS TRAINING THAT INCLUDES JOINT SESSIONS WITH PARENTS AND CHILDREN, AND SESSIONS DEDICATED TO HELPING PARENTS BETTER UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR CHILDRENS SCHOOLS IN ORDER TO BETTER SUPPORT THEIR CHILDRENS ACADEMIC SUCCESS. AS PLANNED, IDENTITY DEVELOPED A NEW MODEL FOR A BILINGUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM (AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER) THAT BUILDS UPON OUR NEEDS ASSESSMENTS AND EXISTING IDENTITY PROGRAMS. FUNDED BY TWO MARYLAND 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER GRANTS, THESE PROGRAMS INCORPORATE NEW APPROACHES TO DEVELOP THE UNTAPPED STRENGTHS OF OUR YOUTH AND FAMILIES TO IMPROVE THEIR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. THE GRANTS ALLOW US TO IMPLEMENT AND EVALUATE THIS PROGRAM OVER THREE YEARS IN THREE LOW-INCOME MONTGOMERY COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOLS WITH PARTICULARLY HIGH LATINO ENROLLMENT. ALTHOUGH THE PROGRAM LASTED ONLY ONE SEMESTER IN ONE SCHOOL, THE OVERALL IMPACT ON GRADES WAS POSITIVE. THE IMPACT WAS MOST VISIBLE AMONG THE STUDENTS WHO BEGAN WITH THE LOWEST MATH GRADES. AMONG THOSE WHO STARTED WITH A D IN MATH (THERE WERE NO ES), 67% RECEIVED A B OR C DURING THE FINAL MARKING PERIOD AMONG THOSE WHO STARTED WITH A C, 54% IMPROVED THEIR GRADE IN THE FINAL MARKING PERIOD TO AN A OR A B. SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SKILLS ALSO SHOWED IMPROVEMENT. CASE MANAGEMENT AND REFERRAL SERVICES FOR LATINO YOUTH AND FAMILIES, AS WELL AS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. IDENTITYS PROGRAMS ARE CONDUCTED IN SPANISH/ENGLISH AND ARE FREE OF CHARGE. AS MINORS FLEEING VIOLENCE IN CENTRAL AMERICA ARRIVED IN GROWING NUMBERS LAST YEAR, WE UTILIZED OUR EXPERIENCE WITH NEWLY-ARRIVED YOUTH AND OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER GROUPS TO CONNECT THEM WITH SERVICES. OUR CASE MANAGERS HELPED GAIN RELEASE OF MINORS TO THE CUSTODY OF THEIR FAMILIES, ARRANGED FOR NECESSITIES LIKE HEALTH CARE AND CLOTHING, AND ASSISTED WITH SCHOOL ENROLLMENTS. OUR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS WELCOMED MANY OF THESE YOUTH. IDENTITY PROGRAMS SERVED ALMOST 500 SUCH CHILDREN IN 2014. IDENTITY ALSO SPEARHEADED EFFORTS OF SERVICE PROVIDERS TO COORDINATE THEIR WORK AND TO ADVOCATE JOINTLY FOR SUPPORT FROM THE COUNTY.
