Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Arts for the aging is a human service organization based in greater washington d.c. That engages older adults and caregivers with diverse abilities and backgrounds in health improvement and life enhancement through regular participation in the arts. Our vision is to demonstrate excellence in multidisciplinary, participatory, and inclusive arts programming. Programs are facilitated by our trained faculty of teaching artists with diverse backgrounds and arts disciplines, and designed to inspire empathy and respect, foster communication and belonging, and promote social connection enhance socialization. Programs take place with clients that are community and residential care settings, and in collaboration with cultural arts and community partners. Programs are fee based with financial aid for clients and partners that wouldn't otherwise have access to best practice creative aging programs and trainings.

Afta engages older adults in health improvement and life enhancement through the arts.

THE GOAL IS TO STIMULATE MINDS, BODIES, SPIRITS AND IMAGINATIONS, PARTICULARLY FOR THOSE LIVING WITH MILD TO MODERATE AGING-RELATED PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS. PROGRAMS EVOLVED FROM THE LATE-FOUNDER'S RESEARCH WHICH SHOWED MOOD AND BEHAVIOR IMPROVEMENTS IN SENIORS WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE WHO WERE INVOLVED IN AN ARTS ACTIVITY. NOW, THEY ARE FACILITATED BY AN EXPERIENCED FACULTY OF TEACHING ARTISTS WHO ARE GROUNDED IN DIVERSE ARTISTIC DISCIPLINES AND TRAINED IN AFTA'S NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED BEST-PRACTICES. PROGRAMS TAKE PLACE FOR GROUPS OF OLDER ADULTS IN COMMUNITY AND RESIDENTIAL CARE SETTINGS SUCH AS ADULT DAY CENTERS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, SENIOR CENTERS, AND SENIOR HOUSING AS WELL AS ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES IN THE GREATER WASHINGTON D.C. - AND, IN MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS.
