Mission

The maryland association for environmental and outdoor education (maeoe), a nonprofit educational association, serves thousands of teachers, natural resource managers, nature center staff, and environmental program managers with dynamic training programs, workshops, conferences, awards programs, networking opportunities, publications, and related materials and resources. Through these efforts, maeoe encourages, educates, supports, and inspires maryland educators to build a citizenry that understands and is responsibly engaged in advancing sustainability to address human needs and to conserve the earth's natural resources.

Maeoe encourages, engages, and empowers the community to understand, responsibly use, and promote the natural world. The organization operates the maryland green schools program and professional development.

IN 2013/14 THERE WERE 450 SCHOOLS AND 38 CENTERS THAT PARTICIPATED IN MAEOE PROGRAMS INVOLVING AND ENGAGING APPROXIMATELY 200,000 STUDENTS, TEACHERS, PARENTS AND CITIZENS. MAEOE PROVIDES THE APPLICATION STRUCTURE FOR THE MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOL PROGRAM, REVIEWING THE PROCESS EACH YEAR WITH STAKEHOLDERS WHO ARE A PART OF THE PROGRAM AND THOSE WHO PROVIDE SUPPORT THROUGH OUR NETWORK OF GREEN CENTERS. IN THE FALL OF 2013 AND SPRING OF 2014 WE PROVIDED 6 WORKSHOPS FOR GREEN CENTERS AND GREEN LEADERS. OUR GREEN CENTERS AND GREEN LEADERS SUPPORT TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOLS PROCESS INCLUDING; SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTING ENVIRONMENTAL BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES SUCH AS PLANTING AND INCREASING RIPARIAN BUFFER ZONES, RECYCLING AND REDUCING SCHOOL WASTE, IDENTIFYING COST SAVING ENERGY REDUCTION THROUGH AUDITS AND PRACTICAL ACTIONS SUCH AS TURNING OFF LIGHTS IN EMPTY CLASSROOMS. IN MAY WE CERTIFIED 59 NEW SCHOOLS, 58 FIRST RECERTIFICATIONS, 16 SECOND RECERTIFICATIONS AND 3 SCHOOLS ACHIEVED SUSTAINED/MODEL GREEN SCHOOL STATUS.MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOLS YOUTH SUMMIT - MAEOE HELD THE FOURTH ANNUAL MARYLAND GREEN SCHOOLS YOUTH SUMMIT MAY 31, 2013 AT SANDY POINT STATE PARK. OVER 1500 STUDENTS FROM SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT MARYLAND ATTENDED. THE YOUTH SUMMIT OFFERED OPPORTUNITIES FOR HANDS ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES AT 45 STATIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY BAZAAR RUN BY ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS. GOVERNOR MARTIN OMALLEY SPOKE DURING THE OPENING CEREMONY TO THANK THE YOUNG PEOPLE FOR ALL OF THEIR HARD WORK TOWARDS MAKING MARYLANDS SCHOOLS SUSTAINABLE GREEN SCHOOLS.
