Mission and Program Overview
Mission
We advocate and embody independence and equality for all people with disabilities. We do this by providing support, guidance, training, education and hands-on-skills for the disability community in Montgomery County and Prince George's County, Maryland.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Work incentives planning and assistance program (wipa) assists individuals who receive disability benefits from the social security administration (ssa)to better understand and use the work incentives available to them. Services are provided to those looking for employment as well as those already employed. During the past year, 913 information and referral calls were received and of these 236 were given intensive services which include pre-employment analyses, work incentives plans, assistance with using specific work incentives and reporting to ssa. In addition, 26 outreach events were conducted across the state of maryland with 1,709 people in attendance and 4 work incentives seminar events were held during which 53 individuals learned about work incentives and support services.
- Activity 3
- Community services program includes assistive technology, travel training and the youth leadership forum. The most significant of these is the division of rehabilitation services assistive technology (dors at) program which assists people with disabilities to continue living independently by funding accessibility modifications to their homes or to acquire a piece of equipment to increase, maintain or improve their functional capacities (i.e. Ramps or stair-lifts or bathroom modifications or equipment). Also information is provided about a variety of independent living equipment and a listing of possible vendors. During the past year, funding was provided for home modifications and/or assistive technology for 44 individuals. Information and referral services were provided to individuals, family members and/or agency representatives regarding resources available to them in the community.
