Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Since its inception in 1988, our charitable mission has been to (1) promote and preserve the legacy and natural resources of historic Camp Oak Hill; (2) provide outdoor recreational activities and opportunities for the appreciation of nature through instructional programs, nature walks, and meditation; (3) provide affordable overnight retreat facilities that create a welcoming environment for the enjoyment of the many diverse individuals, families, and communities represented by our guests; (4) prioritize minority and low-income families, children, youth (ages 14-24), and organizations serving those populations in the Mid-Atlantic region; and (5) subsidize all of these services for at-risk populations through charitable contributions and revenues generated by full-priced rentals of Camp Oak Hill facilities.

Since its inception in 1988, Camp Oak Hill has been dedicated to providing affordable and character building programs for underserved, low-income populations and the organizations that serve those populations in the Mid-Atlantic region. These programs include summer camps and retreat facilities at a minimum 40% price reduction. These reduced rates are subsidized through charitable donations and revenues from full-priced rentals of Camp Oak Hill facilities.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Camp Oak Hill provided lodging, outdoor camping activities, access to natural resources, e.g., boating, fishing, creek exploration, hiking, and recreational facilities to our local community and the broader Mid-Atlantic region. We hosted a total of 35 groups with a total of 833 guests. Of those 35 groups, 20 (57%) met our tax-exempt purpose and our charitable mission: "Our charitable mission is to promote and preserve the historical legacy and natural resources of Camp Oak Hill, to provide outdoor recreational and instructional programs, opportunities for meditation in various nature settings, and overnight retreat facilities that create a welcoming environment for the enjoyment of all the diverse individuals, families, and communities represented by our guests, making a priority of minority and low-income families, children, youth (ages 14-24), and organizations that serve those populations." Those underserved populations accounted for 69% (575) of our guests and received at least a 40% discount on pricing. This significant subsidy either made a group's camp experience possible or allowed them to bring more campers. Examples would be 4-day camps for teenage boys and another for teenage girls from an organization in Baltimore, MD, a Vietnamese Student Association retreat, a Yeshiva school retreat, and a church youth retreat for low-income families. The 15 groups that paid full price plus charitable donations accounted for more than 55% of our revenues, allowing us to subsidize the children, youth, and family camps that are the focus of our mission as a nonprofit organization.$0$99,393

IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Since purchasing the Camp Oak Hill property in 1988, the Camp Oak Hill, Inc. nonprofit organization has been committed to honoring and continuing the historical legacy of the original Camp Oak Hill founders. This was the first camp established by two African American women for African American girls in the US. These women owned and operated the camp from 1948 until 1988 when it was purchased by our non-profit organization. In honor of that legacy, Camp Oak Hill, Inc. has continued providing affordable summer camp and retreat facilities for underserved populations. This includes urban and rural children and youth from low income neighborhoods, young adults, families, autistic adults, and the organizations that serve these and other underserved populations. The Camp Oak Hill board of directors represents a broad interest in the issues facing America's underserved populations and are committed to increasing the solicitation of funds to preserve the legacy of the founders, the natural beauty of the 50 acre property, and to renovate and expand the facilities to better serve our guests and to raise public awareness of the historic founding of Camp Oak Hill.
