Mission

Voices on the border's ("voices") mission is to promote just and sustainable development in el salvador. We envision salvadoran partner communities in which local, national, and international stakeholders work together in a transparent and participatory manner to:- further local economic and social development goals;- increase access to government services;- ensure equity, justice and autonomy; and- contribute to the global struggle for social justice and equality for all people.

ENHANCED ACCESS TO AND QUALITY OF EDUCATION in the Lower Lempa region of El Salvador by providing teacher trainings; salary support for social studies and special needs teachers; and funding for school transportation, preschool education centers, and school infrastructure improvements. Additionally, Voices facilitated an ongoing partnership and exchange of knowledge between educators in the Washington DC area and their counterparts in El Salvador.$22,147$43,718
PROMOTED ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS in the Lower Lempa River region by conducting workshops and public service radio campaigns, supporting community forums and festivals on environmental themes, promoting riparian forest protection, and implementing a school-based environmental curriculum. INCREASED PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE HARMS OF SUGARCANE MONOCULTURE and possible remedies by conducting a survey in impacted communities and disseminating the results, and by supporting and participating in the Azucar Amarga (Bitter Sugar) campaign's community events, forums, and press conferences. IMPLEMENTED A PILOT SUSTAINABLE FAMILY GARDEN PROJECT to address growing food insecurity among highly vulnerable families in the Bajo Lempa region.$6,372$37,987
