Activity 2

The ilsi north america 2012 annual meeting featured business meetings of the board of trustees and members along with a scientific program and discussion of current emerging scientific issues and newly emerging or re-emerging issues the organization could consider addressing through its scientific programs. The 2012 emerging issues included: neurobiology & behavior, standards of science, food safety, risk assessment for nutrients, nutrigenomics, biomarkers, and food availability. Ilsi north america organized a series of scientific sessions on the following topics: microbial aspects of the concept of attributable risk, human gut microbiome, and standards of scientific evidence. Because ilsi north america's annual meeting is held together with that of other ilsi entities, the meeting also provided the opportunity to meet with colleagues from ilsi branches worldwide.

Activity 3

The ilsi north america food and chemical safety committee works on a variety of projects that promote the use of science-based approaches to determine the chemical safety of foods and food ingredients. In 2012, the committee focused on 1) developing a heavy metal screening tool to provide additional context of risk to exposure of five heavy metals found in raw food ingredients; 2) organizing a workshop on "insights and perspectives on emerging inputs to weight of evidence determinations for food safety" to be held january 2013; 3) providing support of the ilsi research foundation's nanorelease food additive project, a collaborative public-private partnership; 4) participating in and supporting the ilsi europe workshop, "food allergy: from thresholds to action levels"; and 5) supporting the preparation of a manuscript on the appropriate application of the thresholds of toxicological concern (ttc) models. In summer 2012, the committee hosted a summer fellow - a doctoral candidate in toxicology from michigan state university; her project focused on the tox21 program, a multi-federal agency project to screen thousands of chemicals for potential toxicity.
