The organization is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, except on net profits derived from unrelated business activities. The organization accounts for income taxes in accordance with fasb asc 740-10, income taxes. It prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken, or expected to be taken, in a tax return and provides guidance on various related matters such as derecognition, interest, penalties and disclosures required. The organization recognizes interest and penalties, if any, related to unrecognized tax benefits in income tax expense. The organization's tax returns are subject to possible examination by the taxing authorities. For federal and state income tax purposes the tax returns essentially remain open for possible examination for a period of three years after the date on which the return is filed.

ENRICHMENT AND RECOGNITION ACTIVITIES ARE WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES AND INCLUDE END OF GRADING PERIOD AND HONOR ROLL CELEBRATIONS, SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS AND FIELD EXPERIENCES. (2) COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAMS- CURRENTLY CONDUCTED AT FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS AND SERVE YOUTH IN GRADE 12. CASE MANAGERS WORK WITH A RATIO OF 30-45 STUDENTS. A SERIES OF 10 WORKSHOPS ANNUALLY ARE CONDUCTED FOR 12TH GRADERS AND THEIR FAMILIES THAT INCLUDE SAT AWARENESS, COLLEGE SELECTION AND ADMISSIONS, FINANCIAL AID, COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE, COLLEGE SUPPORT SERVICES AND COLLEGE ENROLLMENT AND MATRICULATION. YOUTH ALSO BENEFIT FROM COLLEGE VISITATIONS AND GUIDED PARTICIPATION IN COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIRS, AS WELL AS INTERACTION WITH FGCB ALUMNI. FAMILIES AND YOUTH RECEIVE ONE-ON-ONE PERSONALIZED ASSISTANCE IN NEGOTIATING THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID PROCESSES AS WELL AS THE COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE AND MATRICULATION PROCESSES. (3) THE GREAT MINDS GREAT FUTURES ACADEMY- BEGAN IN FIVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND FIVE HIGH SCHOOLS DURING THE 2017-2018 ACADEMIC YEAR. STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN WORKSHOPS, FIELD TRIPS, CAREER EXPLORATION SESSIONS, AND SUMMER ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2018. A COHORT OF 360 7TH, 8TH, AND 9TH GRADE STUDENTS WILL BE TRACKED BY FGCB UNTIL THEY ENROLL IN FGCB'S COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT FROM THE MARYLAND STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF AVAILABLE STATE FINANCIAL AID. (4) RETENTION SERVICES- PROVIDE THE CRITICAL FINAL ELEMENT IN THE MIX OF COLLEGE ACCESS SERVICES PROVIDED BY FGCB. THIS COMPONENT ENSURES THAT YOUTH WHO MATRICULATE COMPLETE POST SECONDARY EDUCATION AND BECOME SUCCESSFUL CONTRIBUTORS TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND SERVE AS ADVOCATES FOR THOSE COMING AFTER THEM. FGCB STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THEIR COLLEGE TENURE. ASSISTANCE IS PROVIDED IN CONNECTING YOUTH TO ACADEMIC AND OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES, ENSURING THAT REQUIRED FINANCIAL AID DOCUMENTS ARE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED ANNUALLY, INTERVENING AND FINDING OPTIONS TO OVERCOME INITIAL BARRIERS TO THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE, INCLUDING CONNECTING YOUTH TO THE VAST ARRAY OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES AND IF NECESSARY, ASSISTANCE IN ENROLLING IN ANOTHER INSTITUTION. THIS YEAR'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS:FGCB SERVED 1,781 STUDENTS ACROSS OUR FOUR PROGRAMS DURING THE 2017-2018 YEAR. WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW PROGRAM, THIS IS THE LARGEST NUMBER OF STUDENTS THE ORGANIZATION HAS EVER SERVED. WE PROVIDED ACADEMIC SUPPORT TO 21 STUDENTS IN OUR HOMEWORK CLUB, PROVIDED COLLEGE ACCESS SERVICES TO 142 SENIORS AND 76 JUNIORS, AND PROVIDED COLLEGE RETENTION SERVICES TO 960 FGCB COLLEGE STUDENTS. GMGFA SERVED 94 STUDENTS AND WE ALSO WORKED WITH 488 7TH AND 8TH GRADERS. THE COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM SERVED 142 SENIORS AND OBTAINED A 98% MATRICULATION RATE FOR GRADUATING SENIORS. MORE THAN 44% OF SENIORS HAD A $0 EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) AND STUDENTS RECEIVED OVER $3.1 MILLION IN FINANCIAL AID. SIXTY PERCENT OF STUDENTS WILL BE ATTENDING A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY AND 40% WILL BE ATTENDING LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGES. THE TOP 4 COLLEGES THAT STUDENTS WILL BE ATTENDING ARE: PRINCE GEORGE'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE, MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY, AND HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE.AT OUR 28TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION, WE RECOGNIZED 66 FGCB STUDENTS FOR RECEIVING A BACHELOR'S DEGREE OR ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE, AS WELL AS 6 STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED GRADUATE DEGREES. FGCB HAS HELPED OVER 2,200 STUDENTS ENTER COLLEGE AND HAS HONORED 733 COLLEGE GRADUATES.
