Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Ci works to spotlight and secure the critical benefits that nature provides to humanity.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Ecosystem Finance manages an array of mechanisms, including grants, loans and other types of funding provided to a wide range of partners, from government agencies and civil society institutions to small businesses and local communities. These financial mechanisms are designed to directly finance conservation in ways that benefit nature and people alike. We awarded more than $19.3 million in grants to non-governmental and private-sector partner organizations globally to stem the tide of biodiversity loss, ensure healthy communities and protect the ecosystem services upon which they depend.
Activity 3
Science & Knowledge develops the social, economic, and natural science that underpins CI's core proposition that nature is essential for human well-being and development; this science also helps set CI's priorities. Our focus is on understanding and quantifying the contribution of nature to human well-being, setting conservation priorities based on ongoing measurement and analysis of the health of ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services that support human well-being, projecting impacts of global change on natural systems, developing green economy scenario options for CI priority land and seascapes, and supporting CI programs globally with applied science and capacity building. During the year, they produced research and (continued on Schedule O)analysis on the linkages among ecosystems, ecosystem services and human well-being, used the results to address threats to ecosystems and their services, and made the scientific findings available for the benefit of the global community by a variety of means, including the publication of 49 scientific articles and books.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0See Schedule OBuilding upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, CI empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature for the well-being of humanity. By protecting nature and its gifts - a stable climate, fresh water, healthy oceans and reliable food - we can ensure a better life for everyone, everywhere.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Global Outreach focuses on key audiences that have an influence on the achievement of a nature-based development path. To this end, Global Outreach brings together CI's Marketing + Communications program, which supports communications targeted to influential audiences efforts across the institution, and the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB), which specifically engages the corporate sector. CELB is a catalyst for innovation, convening corporate and environmental leaders to break new ground in the development of green business models and global commitments to healthy ecosystems and sustainable growth. During the year, they engaged a variety of multi-national corporations to implement "best practices" (for example, through the Business & Sustainability Council, a forum encompassing companies representing global revenues of over $2.05 trillion and employing 5.2 million people). Produced outreach materials - from web content for the general public, to briefing papers for international policy-makers - to educate key audiences about the linkages among healthy ecosystems, ecosystem services and human well-being.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1Global Marine develops and tests (at field demonstration sites) innovative and amplifiable approaches to (and funding mechanisms for): a new world standard for measuring ocean health (e.g., Ocean Health Index); comprehensive ocean governance and management including adaptation to marine climate change (e.g. Oceanscapes and Seascapes); and replacing negative economic incentives with positive incentives in favor of ocean stewardship, especially for sustainable fisheries and Marine Protected Areas. Global Marine is an important incubator of new and creative global and regional marine initiatives. During the year, they worked with partners throughout the fiscal year leading to the August 2010 endorsement of the "Pacific Oceanscape" by the Heads of State and Governments of 15 nations. This framework will provide long-term, sustainable, cooperative management of nearly 24 million square miles of ocean (a region larger than the land size of Canada, the United States and Mexico combined).
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2The Center for Conservation and Government (CCG) promotes innovative solutions that enable governments to take critical actions to conserve biodiversity. Governments face significant challenges in reconciling conservation with national and regional development goals, financial constraints and political realities. CCG helps governments overcome these challenges by piloting new approaches to priority concerns, building diverse and powerful coalitions, and engaging and educating political leaders. CCG also provides institution-wide leadership and coordination on CI's policy, collaboration, and interaction with indigenous people, as well as with NGOs. During the year, CCG promoted development strategies that incorporate the importance of natural capital, including climate change solutions focused on protecting forests, in influential global policy-setting forums. For example, at the 2009 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties, CI played an important role in securing government commitment to REDD+ and helped catalyze pledge commitments of $3.5 billion for REDD initiatives.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3Global Initiatives is responsible for developing and coordinating the successful implementation of CI's core institutional strategies in climate, freshwater, food and health security, cultural services and species conservation. During the year, they led key institutional strategies, including the "Climate Initiative" that helped multiple governments and private sector entities develop "REDD+" projects - a mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sustaining economic growth by halting or preventing the destruction of developing-country forests.

IRS990/Description0Field Programs provide on-the-ground demonstrations for CI's core premise that sustainable economic growth that benefits human well-being over the long-term depends upon protecting nature's assets. CI develops, implements, and manages field programs to achieve important objectives on the ground (i.e. their ability to demonstrate successful nature-based development - "Green Economy demonstrations" - at various scales) and/or to contribute to the policy and markets objectives. Field programs assisted in the creation of approximately 25,090 square kilometers of new parks and reserves around the world, along with 2,346 square kilometers of marine protected areas, that protect healthy ecosystems and their species, so that these areas continue to deliver ecosystem services that benefit (continued on Schedule O)local communities, in addition to human well-being globally.
