Activity 2

Exhibitions (Art Gallery): MPA is regarded as one of the best venues in the greater Washington area for artists to exhibit and the public to view contemporary art. MPA presents 12 to 18 professionally curated or juried exhibitions by regional artists each year. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. Educational programming for each exhibition includes a gallery talk by the exhibiting artist(s) or curator, and may also include lectures, panel discussions, family workshops and docent-led tours. Every March we present the Youth Art Show featuring works by students attending 12 public elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. MPA is a Museum Partner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and brings special exhibitions from the VMFA to McLean.

Activity 3

Educational Outreach (Art Reach): MPA presents ArtReach, an initiative under the direction of an artist/educator which brings students into the gallery for education, docent-led tours of exhibitions and hands-on art activities, and sends an artist into the schools to present in-class slide lectures, classroom art projects and after-school art workshops. One of two exhibitions are designated for student tours each year and the tours are scripted to augment the Virginia state curricula and standards of learning (SOLs). MPA focuses on providing educational tours for "at risk" schools in Fairfax County - schools with large populations of English as Second Language students or students who are eligible for free or reduced cost lunches (identified as Project Excel schools); because these schools have no budget or limited budgets for field trips, MPA provides free transportation for these schools. MPA does not charge a fee for any of these programs.
