Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Ned has a singular mission - advancing democracy in support of freedom around the world. Our targeted, demand-driven small grants program responds to the needs of local ngos that defend human rights, strengthen independent media and civic education, and empower women and youth in a manner that enables them to establish credibility as democratizing forces in their own societies.ned statement of principles and objectives (1984):democracy involves the right of the people freely to determine their own destiny. The exercise of this right requires a system that guarantees freedom of expression, belief and association, free and competitive elections, respect for the inalienable rights of individuals and minorities, free communications media, and the rule of law.

Ned has a single mission - advancing democracy in the world. Our targeted, demand-driven small grants program responds to the needs of local ngos that defend human rights, strengthen independent media and civic education, and empower women and youth in a manner that enables them to establish credibility as democratizing forces in their own societies. Ned further leverages its grants program through networking and recognition activities that provide political support and solidarity (the world movement for democracy, the center for international media assistance, the reagan-fascell democracy fellows program, and democracy award events), as well as through scholarly research that gives activists access to the latest insights on strengthening liberal values and developing strategies for democratic transition (the journal of democracy and the international forum for democratic studies).

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The 990 is reviewed by the budget & audit committee, the president, the chief operating officer, and the senior director of finance. It is also reviewed by the board before filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Directors and individuals employed are required to affirm their compliance with the ned's conflict of interest policy by completing a conflict of interest certification form when first joining the board or first employed and on an annual basis thereafter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

All salaries for ned employees must be commensurate with ned policy established by its board of director's salaries and procedures for salary adjustments are reviewed and approved by the budget and audit committee of the board of directors annually. As part of the committee's review of the endowment's administrative budget, specific salary adjustments for individual employees are recommended by their immediate supervisors, dependent on the merit and/or new responsibilities. The compensation for the organization's president is determined annually by the budget & audit committee in compliance with the same organizational procedures, and the endowment uses the services of an outside consultant as well as published compensation surveys in making this determination.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization does not generally make available its governing documents and financial statements to the general public, but will make such information available upon request for the same period of disclosure as set forth in section 6104(d).

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The endowment is generally exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. In addition, the endowment qualifies for charitable contributions deductions and has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation. Income which is not related to exempt purposes, less applicable deductions, is subject to federal and state corporate income taxes. There was no net tax liability for unrelated business income tax for the year ended september 30, 2014. Management has evaluated the endowment's tax positions and has concluded that the endowment has taken no uncertain tax positions that require disclosure. The endowment files tax returns in the u.s. Federal jurisdictions. Generally, the endowment is no longer subject to u.s. Federal or state and local income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2011.

IRS990/MissionDesc0NED HAS A SINGLE MISSION - ADVANCING DEMOCRACY IN THE WORLD.
